Chapter 10: Outstanding In His Field

While we waited for Pa to hang up the phone and tell us about a surprise, Granny fixed us homemade bread with straight-from-the-shrub blackberry jam. The food was much tastier coming straight from the source.

“I’m going to miss homegrown vittles as much as I’m going to miss you and Pa,” I told Granny after swallowing my first bite.

“You can still have homegrown goodies,” Granny said as she shelled peas from the garden.

“How?” we asked.

Great American Smokeout

The American Cancer Society marks the Great American Smokeout on the third Thursday of November each year by encouraging smokers to use the date to make a plan to quit, or to plan in advance and quit smoking that day. By quitting — even for one day — smokers will be taking an important step towards a healthier life.

Tobacco use remains the single largest preventable cause of disease and premature death in the US, yet almost 1 out of 3 adults and teens in Kentucky smoke or use tobacco products.

“It happens all the time,” the firefighter told Pa. “Those city pups did what they thought was right.”

“Don’t worry one iota over what happened,” Pa said, making us feel better. “That firefighter was correct – you acted in good faith, and that’s something to be proud of.”

“I don’t understand how the barn wasn’t on fire since there was smoke pouring from it,” Chloe said.

BCHS Accounting Class Travels to WKU

The Butler County High School Accounting class attended an event at Western Kentucky University on Friday November 1st. Students were addressed by several accounting professionals and covered several topics that were actual "hands-on" accounting applications. Students were also addressed by the Dean of the Gordon Ford College of Business, Dr. Jeff Katz. Dr. Katz encouraged the students to attend WKU and pursue an accounting degree. The field trip was very beneficial for the accounting students who had a chance to see real world applications.
