2013 BCHS Cheer Squad readies for busy year

The Butler County Cheerleaders have started their year off with a camp at BCHS July 15-17.   The Cheerforce Coaches from Bowling Green conducted a 3-day camp in the fieldhouse on the BCHS campus.  

The girls worked very hard at learning new cheer stunts and their competition routine for the year," said Coach Lisa Rhoades.

Throughout the week the cheerleaders and coaches participated in team building activities such as bowling and mini-golf at Southern Lanes and a pool party at the Morgantown City Pool.

Local travel baseball team holding tryouts

Open try-outs will be held for the Green River Mud Cats 11U travel baseball team on Saturday, August 17, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Charles Black Park in Morgantown.  The Mud Cats will be coached by Mark Norris and Rodney McMillin.

Wallace qualifies for All "A" State; BCHS Golf Team looking for new players

Fall golf season has begun and the Butler County High School golf team is seeking players.  Any girl interested in learning how to play golf or joining the high school team needs to meet on Tuesday morning at 9 a.m. at the Hidden Valley Golf Course.

In other BCHS Golf news, Emily Wallace qualified at Windward Heights Country Club in Hancock County to play in the Touchstone Energy All "A" State Tournament, which will be held in Somerset on September 7.

From Bears to Bearcats: Manning, Drake to play college softball at Brescia University

Two Butler County High School Softball players will be continuing their playing careers close to home.

Morgan Manning and Madeline Drake, who just completed their senior season, will be signing to play college softball at Brescia University in Owensboro, Kentucky.  The duo will make it official on Monday, July 22, at 6:30 p.m. in a brief ceremony at the Butler County High School Commons Area.  Bearcats' Head Coach Traci Smith will be in attendance.

Fall Softball League planned for girls ages 5-10

The Butler County Girls' Softball League will be hosing a fall softball league for players ages 5-10 (as of April 1, 2013 or played on during the spring league).

Sign-ups for the Fall Ball League will be July 15, 16 and the 22nd. Sign-ups will be at McDonald's and the Sno-Shack from 5-7 p.m. at both locations. Cost will be $30 per girl and each additional sibling is $25.

KABC Rising Senior Teams Announced - Butler's Woodcock and Jenkins to participate

The KABC (KY Association of Basketball Coaches) would like to announce the members of the 2013 3rd Region Rising Senior team.  Butler County seniors Zeke Woodcock and Trevor Jenkins have been chosen to play in the game.  The duo will be joining top players from the 3rd Region.   This team will represent the 3rd Region in 1st Annual Rising Senior game to be held at Apollo High School July 13th at 7:00 p.m. Admission is $5. Tim Taylor will be the head coach and he will be assisted by Willis McClure.

GRCF $10,000 Fishing Tournament to kick-off July 4

The premiere event upon which the entire Green River Catfish Festival is built - the fishing tournament - is set to begin on Thursday, July 4 and will run through Saturday, July 6.  The tournament, which is from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, will feature the "big one," a prize catfish that could be worth $10,000 for one lucky and skilled angler.  There are 43 tagged fish in the water, including other "special" fish that provide anglers with opportunities to win prize money.  Also, Beech Tree News/WLBQ 1570 will be giving away a guaranteed $100 through a blind draw of all fishing tickets.

Morgantown-Butler County Swim Team 2-0

On June 27th the Morgantown-Butler County Swim Team traveled to Glasgow where they faced off against the Barren County Y Killer Whales and the Scottsville YMCA Seadragons. The meet started at 5:45 PM and went until about 9:45 PM. By the end of the meet MBCST – Barracudas had won. The final scores were Scottsville 319, Barren County Y 414, and MBCST 524.  This is the second overall win for MBCST of the 2013 season. Thus far MBCST has defeated six teams in two matches.

Timmy Keown's show car a cousin to the "Black Widow"

Morgantown resident Timmy Keown’s 1957 Chevrolet Sedan is a cousin to the Black Widow car. The one fifty, or 150 is not the usual 1957 Chevy Belair that you see. The 150 is a special model that General Motors made especially for Police departments, Taxi  Companies and Delivery Companies. In its more unusual form it rolled off the assembly line ready for drag racing known as the “Black Widow”, mainly because of its racing bite and because it came in only black and white.

Joe K. Morris: Armchair Allstar

On Father's Day, one vital part of the celebration for five-year-old Charlie Leffler was missing. His dad, former NASCAR regular Jason Leffler, wasn't there. He was killed last Wednesday night racing on a .60 mile dirt track in New Jersey. Jason Leffler was 37.
