New Historical Marker honors Maurice Hudson Thatcher

The Kentucky Historical Society (KHS)  dedicated a new historical marker April 17, 2015, in Butler County to honor former civic leader Maurice Hudson Thatcher. The ceremony took place Friday on the courthouse lawn.

Fiscal Court Approves Nuisance Ordinance 4-1

The Butler County Fiscal Court met on Monday night in the first bi-monthly session for April. All members were present.

Greg Meredith from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 3 was in hand to discuss Rural Secondary Road Funds for the 2015 Fiscal Year. Butler County will receive a total of $1,246,725 in funding. $610,762 of the funds will be used on two repaving projects on Kentucky Highway 1187 and Kentucky Highway 1118.

Butler County Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen of the Year

The Butler County Daughters of the American Revolution announce the Good Citizen for 2015.  Matthew Cordel Embry, son of Mark and Kimberlea Embry, senior at Butler County High is our Good Citizen.
Matthew has been active in many school activities his high school years.  Some are the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, Beta Club, Science Club and Rocket Team, the Marching and Concert Band, Academic team, Cross Country team, Tennis team, Republican Party of Butler County and Math Club.  Matthew has maintained a 4.0 in his studies.

Report: State has high suicide rate

Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in Kentucky and the second leading cause of death in people ages 15 to 34, according to a "Mortality in the United States Report," published by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control.

"People commit suicide when they see no way out from whatever the situation is. Usually people feel hopeless, they see no light at the end of the tunnel, and that hopelessness is a key factor in someone following through with the act of killing themselves," said Dr. Laurie Ballew, medical director at Paducah's Lourdes Behavioral Health Institute.

Mrs. Hawkins will be at local event, SOKY Book Fest in Bowling Green,KY April 17, 18, Carroll Knicely Center. She will be speaking at 11 am CST on Sat.

State Farm Insurance: New Location, New Agent

State Farm Insurance held a ribbon cutting for the new building on Friday morning. The ribbon cutting ceremony was followed by a cookout of hamburgers and hotdogs in the parking lot. There were several community members in attendance, including Mayor Phelps and some members of the Chamber of Commerce. The ceremony was put on to celebrate the move from the previous storefront location at 811 S Main St, to a unit at the end of the strip closer to the road.

WKU To Host Mini Bluegrass Festival April 16

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – WKU’s Cultural Enhancement Series and the Kentucky Folklife Program will present Kentucky Strings: Bluegrass Music & Beyond on April 16 at Downing Student Union South Lawn.

The outdoor concert series will kickoff at 12:30 p.m. and feature various bluegrass bands performing throughout the day. The event is free for the campus and community. Bring your own chair or blanket and enjoy the music.

Divided Council Debates KY Copper Building

Thursday night’s meeting of the Morgantown City Council was dominated by debate on what to do with the former Kentucky Copper building and by discussion on Morgantown Utilities’ sewer costs.  Council member Dionne Merritt was absent from the meeting.
