Cheryl Hughes: Good Enough

My granddaughter, Sabria, had her tonsils removed last Tuesday.  She has really struggled.  I made the mistake of holding a flashlight up to her mouth and looking at the back of her throat.  It was very nasty looking, to the point that I almost dropped the flash light.  She stayed at our house the first night.  She had to be awoken every three hours for pain medication.  She slept on the futon in the room next to ours, under her snowman blanket.

Jarrod Jacobs: Don’t Believe Your Eyes!

Magicians’ sleight of hand fools most people when it is done correctly. When watching them, we are wise when we heed the warning, “Don’t believe your eyes.” In entertainment, many a short man has been made taller on television and in the movies by filming him next to his “leading lady” while he stands on a box! CGI, or computer-generated imaging, has created scenes and events that could never have happened otherwise. Not only our sight, but all of our senses can be fooled in many ways.

BOLD COWARDICE-I would like to start off with a quote by someone else which goes as follows, “it should be remembered that brutality is not manliness but cowardice!” I could not find out who originally said that quote and a quick search provided no definitive answers, so, though I would like to give credit to the author of this incredibly wise observation, I am unable. Those few words do hold a vast amount of truth in them though, wouldn't you agree?

Debby Burden Lanham: View From My Lens

“Country as cornbread.” That’s what comes to mind when I look at this photo. I absolutely love this shot; the tobacco, the corn, the barn, it just doesn’t get any more country. To me it reflects what Kentucky is made of; strong working men and women.  When we saw this scene, even after I took the photo, my husband and I just admired the beauty wrapped up in this shot. There is so much beautiful country around us for us to enjoy, be sure you take time to do just that!

Andy Sullivan: Against the Grain

Are apps the way of the future? Let me clarify, I’m talking about applications for your phone and not appetizers you order at a restaurant.  When I went to research for this column, I came upon some pretty funny stuff.  This first headline was so obvious it was hilarious.  It was: Watch out: Cell phones can be addictive.  You don’t say!

Patty Craig: A Slice of Time

The summer vacation has flown by! Our local children recently returned to school. Although I knew it was coming, I wasn’t ready for school to begin. But it’s that time again.

Cheryl Hughes: Oak Alley

Oak Alley is named for the 300-year-old Virginia live oaks that border the walk way up to the Big House.

Near the town of Vacherie, Louisiana, is a road that runs along the Mississippi River.  It is referred to as Plantation road.  Along that road are several historical plantations, most built before the Civil War.  While visiting our daughter, Nikki, last week, Garey and I got the opportunity to visit the plantation called Oak Alley.

Jarrod Jacobs: A Man After God’s Own Heart

The statement above is well-known to many. It is based on the words of Scripture found in I Samuel 13:14 and Acts 13:22. What made David a man after God’s own heart? The answer to this question is found in I Samuel 13:14. Can we possess those characteristics today? Let the Bible answer.

When reading I Samuel 13, we see that David was “a man after God’s own heart” because he was obedient to the Lord. Evidently, God saw in David something not found in Saul, and that was his willingness to continue to obey God even when it was hard to do!

Debby Burden Lanham: Picture of the Week

Blue skies, country drive, camera in hand,  barns and silo’s, what more could a girl want ? If I were monetarily rich, I’d spend my days just driving the country to find sights like this. It does my heart good. We should all want to enjoy the beauty that is layed upon us. The earth is so filled with it, everywhere we look. Get out and enjoy!!
