Wanda Mae Guffy

Wanda Mae Guffy died at 90 years of age on August 30th, 2017 at The Episcopal Church Home in Louisville, Kentucky. She was born February 15, 1927 to Mae and Aubrey Phelps of Eden, Kentucky in Butler County.

Wanda personified the grit, wit, and soulfulness that only a southern country girl can. Her younger years were spent working the land on her family’s farm in Butler County and learning to command the kitchen with grace.

In her adult life, she developed an impeccable style and managed the women’s clothing department of several department stores in Louisville, Kentucky and Fort Lauderdale, Florida, while also sharing many hobbies, including crafts, baking, sewing, and gardening with family and friends.  Over the years, her love of adventure took her overseas to Russia, Japan, the Arctic Circle, and beyond with her younger sister, Ruth.

No matter her circumstances, Wanda’s sense of humor, fierce independence, and unapologetic honesty fueled her perseverance and kept all who knew her on their toes.

She was a long-time member of Christ Community Church, formerly Clifton Heights Baptist Church, and she continued attending worship services at The Friendship House and The Episcopal Church Home.

She is survived by her two sons, Anthony (Jeannie) Guffy and Darrel (Karyl Johnson) Guffy; her grandchildren, Cheryl Cubbage, Gannon (Nathan) Weaver, Willow and Brandi Guffy, and Kris Johnson; and her great-grandchild, Brendan Cubbage; her sisters, Ruth Scott of  Morgantown, Kentucky, Betty Essex of Ocala, Florida, Dewey Phelps of Stanton, Kentucky, and several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her mother and father, Mae and Aubrey Phelps, her sisters Bertha Phelps, Helen Howard, Lucille Flener, and her brother Jullian Clellan Phelps.

A special thanks is extended to Dr. Jane Cornett, the caregivers at The Episcopal Church Home, and her dear friend Penny Brill of First Christian Church of Louisville for supporting and caring for her in the final stages of her life.

Visitation with the family will be held at Smith Funeral Home, 403 N. Main Street, Morgantown, KY on Saturday, September 2, 2017 at 12:00 p.m. CT until time of service at 1:00 p.m. CT.
