Virginia P. “Gingie” Hurst Hines passed away January 18, 2024 at Haven Hospice in Gainesville, Florida. She was born July 13, 1937 to George Arthur and Alma Virginia Flener Hurst, and grew up in Morgantown, Kentucky, graduating from Butler County High School in 1955. On April 10, 1958, she married Thomas Collier Hines and they had three sons, Thomas Collier Hines, Jr., Maurice Scott Hines, and James Wade Hines. Leaving Morgantown in 1965, the family lived in Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; Buffalo Springs, Tennessee; and Perkins, Oklahoma, before settling in Newberry, Florida in 1974. 

Gingie attended Georgetown College for two years, then graduated from Western Kentucky University in 1960. Soon after, she began her teaching career in home economics at BCHS and continued to teach until 2003 when she retired from Spring Hill Elementary School, High Springs, Florida, as Teacher of Family and Consumer Science. She received her master’s degree in 1987.

Tommy and Gingie devoted a great amount of their married life to church work, focusing on youth ministry for the first twenty years of their marriage, and more recently on adult small groups in their home. Gingie also taught ESL (English as a second language) in a local Hispanic church for many years, served as a home-bound teacher, volunteered at local homeless shelters and in prison ministry, was active in church music, and most recently served as a greeter at The Family Church, Gainesville, Florida. Gingie was also an excellent cook and possessed the gift of hospitality, hosting scores of people in her home over the years. 

Gingie loved life, loved people, and loved her family unconditionally. She was devoted to her three sons. She possessed a strong faith, an unwavering positive attitude, a deep sense of compassion and empathy, a keen sense of humor, and an infectious smile that we will all remember forever.

Gingie Hines is survived by her husband of 65 years, Tommy Hines, Sr., Newberry, Florida, and her sons Tommy Jr., and Wade (Moksha), all of Woodbury, Kentucky. Daughter-in-law Lisa Hines, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Grandchildren Maurice Scott Hines, Jr. (Cassie) of Rome, Georgia, Joshua Kyle Hines (Taylor) of Alabaster, Alabama, Sharon Virginia Wilson (Alex) of Rockmart, Georgia, Kaleb Ezekial Sommer-Hines and Sylvan Elias Sommer-Hines of Woodbury, Kentucky. Great-grandchildren Addison James Hines, Collier Ellis Hines, Ada Lee Hines, Oliver Hoyt Hines, Harper Cate Wilson, and Easton Hines Wilson. 

She is preceded in death by her parents, her in laws Maurice Collier and Hilda Melton Hines and her son, Scott (1962-2010).

Funeral services will be held at the Jones Funeral Chapel Thursday, January 25, 2024 at 1:00pm with Bro. Philip Griffin officiating. Burial will be in the Cook Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 24, 2024 from 5:00pm - 8:00pm and Thursday 8:00am until funeral time at 1:00pm at the Jones Funeral Chapel.
