Vanda Marlene Embry Hetrick
Vanda Marlene Embry Hetrick, affectionately known as Marlene to her friends and family, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 27, 2026, at Morgantown Care & Rehab in Morgantown, Kentucky. Born on October 6, 1938, in Butler County, Kentucky, Marlene was a beacon of light and wisdom in the lives of all who knew her.
Marlene was preceded in death by her parents, Oscar and Nannie Pearl Lacefield Ashley; her husband, Emmitt Embry; and her siblings, Hillard Ashley, Rossie Ashley, Myrtle Browning, and Charles Linberg Ashley. She is survived by her niece, Linda Keown (Bobby) of Morgantown, KY; her nephew, Garry Ashley of Morgantown, KY; and several great nieces and nephews.
Marlene was of the Baptist faith, and her commitment to education and the future of children was evident in her 20-year tenure as a beloved school teacher at 5th District Elementary. Marlene's intelligence and passion for teaching shaped the lives of countless students, leaving a legacy of learning and curiosity. Beyond her professional achievements, Marlene was a prolific writer and artist. Her book, "Reflections," allowed readers a glimpse into her insightful mind and the beauty she saw in the world. She was a woman of many interests and talents. She found joy in writing, drawing, and composing poems, often capturing the beauty of the world around her with her words and sketches. Her love for nature was profound, and reflecting on the beauty of creation.
She was a loving soul who treasured the time spent visiting with friends and family.
Funeral services will be held at the Jones Funeral Chapel Tuesday, March 3, 2026 at 1:00pm with Bro. Colten Cardwell officiating. Burial will be in the Wilson Home Cemetery where her family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 3, 2026 from 9:30am until funeral time at 1:00pm at the Jones Funeral Chapel.
