Thomas Granville Cates

Thomas Granville Cates, 87,  of Morgantown, Kentucky passed away Sunday, April 14, 2013 at the Morgantown Care and Rehab Center in Morgantown. Mr. Cates was born June 4, 1925 in Logan County, to the late Joseph William Cates  and Fannie Pearl Price Cates.  He was a member of the  Methodist Temple in Russellville, VFW Post 5837 and the Genealogical Society, He was a  WWII  United States Army Veteran with 4 Bronze Stars . He graduated  in 1943 from Russellville High School and then attended Western Kentucky University after returning home from Service. He worked as a John Deere Farm Machinery Salesman for many years. His intelligence, dry wit, and sense of humor was maintained until his passing and was appreciated by all he met.  His greatest joy was reading stories, fully in character, to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his Parents and Wife Mona Elizabeth (Betty) Brown Cates, Two Brothers Lynn David Cates, Dewitt Cates and One Sister Katherine McCormick.  

Thomas Granville Cates is survived by his Son Granvil Eugene Cates of Morgantown; Daughter  Elizabeth Ann Cates of Whitehouse, Tn.; Five Grandchildren and Eight Great-Grandchildren; One brother Robert Cates of Louisville    

Funeral Service will be held at Smith Funeral Home, Wednesday, April 17, 2013 at  1:00 p.m.  with Bro. Darrin Jones officiating. Burial will follow in the Monticello Church Cemetery at Provo, Ky. Visitation will be Tuesday, April 16, 2013 from 3:30 - 8:00 p.m. and Wednesday 8:00 a.m. until time of service at Smith Funeral Home, Morgantown, Ky.
