Robert S. Francis, MD

Born Jan. 4, 1944 and reared in Tulsa, OK; married Sharron H. Francis on July 27, 1968 for 45 years.
Preceded in death by parents, father Alex W. Francis, Jr. and mother Jewell Womack Francis.   

Survived by: Sharron H. Francis, wife of 44 years, sister [Patricia Aronson (Hal)] of Coronado, CA, son Jason Francis (Jenny), daughter [Heather Graham (Josh)] of Mt. Pleasant, SC, grandchildren (Peyton Graham and Lorelei Graham, and his beloved dogs (Clarke, Isaac, Jenny, and Blackie).

Education and Employment: Graduate of Edison High School in Tulsa, OK (1962) where he swam on state championship team. Earned a B.S. at Vanderbilt University (1965) in Chemistry and was a member of the Vanderbilt golf team.  He earned his M.D. at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in 1969.  Following residency training in radiology at the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology at Washington University in St. Louis, he served for two years in the US Public Health Service at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD.  He served as a faculty member in the Department of Radiology at Vanderbilt University and as practicing radiologist with Radiology Consultants for more than 30 years.

Memberships, activities and awards:Member of Kappa Alpha social fraternity. He was awarded the McGill award as most outstanding freshman at Vanderbilt. He was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha, the medical honor society.  He was a long time member of Hillwood Country Club.
Interests: He was a highly accomplished golfer, an ardent naturalist and arborist. He was active in birdwatching, hiking, and myriad conservation efforts.  He was an avid reader, an advocate for animal rights and an admirer of all things beautiful.  He loved to spend time at his ranch in southwestern MT where he enjoyed fly fishing and worked to protect the natural features of the land.
A private family graveside service will be held at a later date.
Remembrances can be sent to the Nashville Humane Association.
