Johnnie James Cockriel

Johnnie James Cockriel, 92, of Bowling Green, Kentucky, was peacefully welcomed into the arms of Jesus on January 7, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.

Born on April 11, 1933, Johnnie lived a life characterized by a tireless work ethic and a spirit of adventure. A gifted mechanic and a natural with machinery, he became a coveted mechanic in the United States Army and was a well-known tractor salesman and mechanic in his community for many years, as well as working for RC Cola, where he served as a head mechanic for their fleet. His career was as diverse as it was storied; from the colorful days spent traveling with his wife for a circus company, to countless miles logged picking up vehicles for an auto auction, Johnnie approached every job with dedication.

Beyond his professional life, Johnnie was a man of profound and simple faith. He found great peace in the Word of God and was a dedicated student of the Bible. His legacy of faith remains rooted in the community as a founding member of Three Springs Baptist Church.

Johnnie was preceded in death by his parents James Ezra and Janie Cockriel, his beloved wife of 61 years, Eliza Cockriel (Deweese); and his siblings, AB Cockriel, Martha Stamper, Mary Opal Harrod, and Lonnie Cockriel.

His memory will be cherished by his three children: Geneva Davis, Gary Cockriel (Torie), and Gloria Cockriel. He was a proud grandfather to Melanie Swiatek (Theodore) and Jonathan Wester (Megan), and a loving great-grandfather to Caleb Wester, Cash Wester, and Cole Swiatek. He is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins, as well as his dear friend, Edith Moran and all “the office” crew.

Johnnie’s life was one of many adventures and stories of which he shared with his family and friends. The laughter his stories brought will continue on in the minds of those he told and will always bring joy and fond memories.

The family will receive friends and visitors Sunday, January 11, 2026 from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm and Monday, January 12 from 9:00 am until funeral service at 11:00 am. At J.C. Kirby & Son Lovers Lane Chapel.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to Alzheimer's Association, Greater Kentucky & Southern Indiana Chapter at PO Box 24362, Lexington, KY 40524
