James Lewis “Jim” Womack, Sr., 97, of Lawrenceburg, Kentucky departed this life on Sunday, July 30, 2023 at Taylor Manor Nursing Home in Versailles, Kentucky.

Born Wednesday, February 24, 1926 in Dallas, Texas, Jim was the son of Valice Monroe Womack & Irene Genelle Givens. Jim was orphaned at age 2, and grew up on a farm near Morgantown in western Kentucky. He began to work in the fields as soon as he could see over the handles of the plow. Times were very hard. His wise investing began as a young boy when he would wait for a hen to cackle and take the fresh egg to the general store to trade for some penny candy. Not a person in his family could attend his high school graduation, and he enlisted in the U.S. Navy the day following to serve his county in World War II as a control tower operator stateside in Florida. He would ultimately fall in love with the sunshine state and return to live there in his retirement with his sweet, Nannie Ruth. He was also a member of the Bethlehem Baptist Church.

Jim’s greatest accomplishment was raising four children, two boys, & two girls, while earning a living as an auto mechanic in Louisville, Kentucky. Both his sons died early at 25 and 28, and he wrapped his heart around his two girls until his death at 97. He provided well for them until the end of his life, leaving more than a monetary inheritance. He left a legacy. He was a great encourager who taught by example and lived his life walking with his Savior every step. Get up early. Eat a healthy breakfast. Read your Bible and pray for each other. Exercise and keep going. Be generous with what God has provided you. Exercise!

Besides his parents, Valice Monroe Womack & Irene Genelle Givens; his former spouses, Joyce, Joie Rose & Nannie Ruth, sons, James L. Womack, Sr. & Glenn Womack; siblings, Mary Baldwin Beckland & Maurice Lynn Womack; & grandson, David Hudson, Sr. precede Jim in his passing.

Left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Deborah (Bill) Hudson & Denise Womack; 7 – grandchildren, Lori (Chad) Bertrand, Brett (Cindy) Hudson, Bill (Melissa) Hudson, Sarah (Dan) Holden, Kara Klapp, John (Amanda) Payne & Sam (Katie) Payne; 18 – great – grandchildren, David, Jr., Ryen, Sawyer, Della, Kennan, Kaden, Alexandra, Ethan, Dori, Emme, Isaac, Norah, Zachary, Ava, Emma, Harrison, Jude & August; special friend, Mary Copeland; many nieces, nephews; plus, a host of other relatives & friends to mourn his passing.

Funeral Services will be held on Monday, August, 7, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. in the Dignity Chapel of the Evergreen Funeral Home. Jim will be laid to rest in the Garden of the Community Mausoleum of Evergreen Cemetery & Garden Mausoleums where his earthly body will rest for eternity, alongside his former wife, Joie Rose & son, James L. Womack Jr. Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. until the Funeral Hour of 2:00 p.m. also at the Evergreen Funeral Home.

In Lieu of flowers & customary expressions of sympathy, memorial contributions can be directed in Jim’s memory to the Taylor Manor Nursing Home.
