Hunter Shields

Hunter Shields, 28, of Centertown, passed away January 5, 2026. He was born on June 24, 1997, to Mandy Hays and Joe Shields. He was a member of East Hartford Baptist Church.

Hunter found joy in the things he loved most—being outdoors hunting and fishing, spending time with his collection of firearms, and immersing himself in music. An animal lover at heart, he had a deep appreciation for vinyl records and 1980s memorabilia, reflecting his nostalgic spirit and individuality. He also enjoyed computer gaming, where he found both relaxation and connection. Hunter’s interests reflected his curious nature and the comfort he found in both the outdoors, animals, and the things that brought him happiness.

Hunter is preceded in death by his grandmother, Tonja Shields; cousin, Caleb Barnes; and best friend, his dog, Obi.

Those left to cherish his memory include his mother, Mandy (Chris) Hays, of Owensboro; father, Joe (Sheila) Shields, of Morgantown; siblings, Eli (Hannah) Hays, Hillary Shepherd, and Matt Burden; niece, Elizabeth Fern “Ellie” Hays; nephews, Bryson and Braxton Wooldridge; and grandparents, Terry and Pat Kessinger, Richard Shields, Clellan and Brenda Hays, and James Boone.

Funeral services will be 11:00 am Thursday, January 8, 2026, at Haley McGinnis Funeral Home, with Sister Betty Shaver officiating. Visitation will take place on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, from 3:00 pm until 7:00 pm, and will resume on Thursday, January 8, 2026, from 9:00 am until time of service at the funeral home.
