George Bentley Phelps Sr.

George Bentley Phelps Sr., 81, of  Morgantown, Ky., passed away Sunday, Oct. 8, 2017 at Tristar Greenview Regional Hospital in Bowling Green. George was born and raised in Morgantown.  He joined the Army on Sept. 14, 1961, served 2 tours in Vietnam, 11 years in Germany, was stationed twice in Missouri and achieved the rank of First Sergeant.  He retired on Sept. 30, 1983 after serving 22 years, at which time he returned to Morgantown with his family to live out his days.  After retirement he enjoyed wood crafting, repairing boats, hunting, fishing, traveling and was a German Uhrmeister "clock repairman".  George attended Belmont General Baptist Church and was a member of the Reedyville Masonic Lodge # 438 F. & A.M.   He was preceded in death by his parents Ellis and Velma Tarrence Phelps; son Gary Wayne Phelps; daughter Tammy Rose Phelps Bramblett; sisters Adaline Johnson and Viva Jean Hunt.

Mr. Phelps is survived by his wife of 51 years Betty L. Phelps of Morgantown; two daughters Dianna Carter (Greg) of Morgantown, Karen Bell Manion (Tony) of Louisville; two sons James Phelps of Morgantown and George Phelps Jr. (Connie) of Indiana; grandchildren Shain Carter (Sabrina), J. Hunter Phelps, Kaylee Phelps, Miranda Bramblett, Anthony W. Bell (Tina), Michael A. Bell (Bobby Jo), George Phelps III (Brittany) and Gary Phelps; great grandchildren Dakotah Carter, William Kidd, Matthew Bell, Jacob Bell, Evan Bell, Grayson Bell, Ava Phelps, Hannah Phelps, Isaac Phelps, Constance Phelps and Garrison Phelps; two sisters; Jolene Hunt (Elmer) of Morgantown, Shirley Smith ( David) of Morgantown. Several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral Service will be held at Smith Funeral Home on Thursday, Oct. 12 at 1 pm with Bro. Gary Embry officiating. 

Burial will follow in the Clark Cemetery with Military Honors being performed by Fort Campbell. 

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 11 from 11am-9 pm with a Masonic service to be held at 7 pm and Thursday from 8 am until time of service at Smith Funeral Home.
