Doris Tichenor

Doris Annis Tichenor, 80, of Logansport, KY and Gainesville, FL, died Thursday afternoon, November 17, 2011, in Lexington, KY.
 
Doris was born to the late Wendell and Amy Annis on October 18, 1931 in Morgantown, KY.  She was Valedictorian of her high school class at Logansport, KY and entered the University of Kentucky at age 16, where she studied Home Economics.  After graduating Doris married Carroll Tichenor of Centertown, KY on February 16, 1952 and they resided in the Bluegrass area of Kentucky for the next 32 years.
 
During this time Doris obtained her MS and PhD degrees at the University of Kentucky and joined the faculty in the College of Home Economics and served as Associate Dean from 1969-1984.  In 1984, Doris left the University of Kentucky to become Director of Home Economic Programs and Chair of the Department of Home Economics at the University of Florida.   She was inducted into the UK Home Economics Hall of Fame in 2001.  Doris retired in 1994 as Professor Emeritus of Family, Youth and Community Sciences at the University of Florida, and she and Carroll divided their time between Gainesville and Logansport until her death.
 
At an early age, Doris joined Salem Baptist Church in Logansport.  She had a lifelong interest in the outdoors and enjoyed such pastimes as hiking and bird watching.  Doris believed strongly in environmental conservation and was active in the Sierra Club for many years.
 
Doris is survived by her husband of 59 years, Carroll Tichenor, her daughter Karen Van Sanford of Lexington, KY, her son Caylen Tichenor of Macon, GA, and her grandchildren, Kirsten Tichenor and Carson and Blake Van Sanford.
 
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to Salem Cemetery 498 L.Moore Rd. Morgantown Ky 42261. Funeral services will be held at the Salem Baptist Church Monday Nov. 21, 2011 at 2:00pm with Bro. Derrick Cain officiating. Burial will be in the Salem Cemetery.   Visitation Sunday  November 20, 2011 from 6:00pm - 8:00pm  at the Jones Funeral Chapel and Monday visitation will be from 12:00pm until funeral time at the Salem Baptist Church. You didn't have to spend much time around this lady to realize she was a wonderful Christian woman. She always found ways to encourage others and lived by example. Butler County has definitely lost an irreplaceable person. Prayers are with Carroll and family.
Doris Tichenor was a fine, gifted Christian woman. She also accomplished great things in her career because of her determination, hard work and an exceptional mind. Proud to say she was from Butler County! Prayers for her family.
Doris Tichenor devoted herself to family, friends and worthy causes in the wider community. Enthusiasm and hard work were her hallmarks and a wonderful example for all of us.
