Billy Glen Daugherty

Billy Glen Daugherty age 73 of Morgantown, Ky passed away November 1, 2015 at Owensboro Regional Hospital in Owensboro, Ky. Born on January 10, 1942 in the Gilstrap community of Butler County, Kentucky. Billy was the only child of the late Lawrence and Dorsie Butler Daugherty.
After graduating from Butler County High School in 1959, that Fall Billy entered Western State College (Western Kentucky University) as well as took a position of employment with Butler County Schools as a teacher. Billy began his work on his bachelor’ degree while at the same time teaching in a one room school house in his home community of Gilstrap. That is when Billy became known as Mr. Daugherty to Gilstrap and Butler County. Mr. Daugherty continued his long education career, teaching at Fifth District Elementary while at the same time completing his education at Western Ky University receiving his Masters and Rank I degrees. He later became Principal of Fifth District Elementary and eventually he retired as a Physical Education teacher at Morgantown Elementary. Mr. Daugherty also coached several different sports throughout his education career. He coached Boys and Girls Basketball, Football, at Fifth District Elementary and even was the Cheerleading sponsor. After retiring from Butler County Schools in 1995, Mr. Daugherty continued working as a substitute teacher in Butler and Ohio Counties where a whole new generation came to know and love Mr. Daugherty. Mr. Billy Daugherty finally retired from education in April of 2015 with nearly 55 years of being in the schools of Butler County.
Mr. Daugherty could often be found at area flea markets and auctions, where he enjoyed bartering and trading. He was an avid bird hunter always keeping a bird dog and he was also a huge sports fan. He loved watching University of Kentucky Basketball as well as Los Angeles Dodgers baseball, and could always be found at many Butler County High School and Butler County Middle School sporting events. But more than anything, he loved watching his grandkids play any sport and often coached their teams which included Butler County Little League Baseball and Butler County Jr. Pro. Basketball.
Mr. Billy Daugherty was a long time member of the Gilstrap Church of Christ, where he led singing as well as brought many messages. Other than his parents Mr. Daugherty was preceded in death by one daughter, Glenda Joyce Daugherty.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Wilma Joyce Carrier of Gilstrap, KY., one daughter; Carmen Flener and husband J. Chad Flener of Morgantown, KY, seven grandchildren; LaTarrence Mayhew and Mary-Adra Wood of Bowling Green, Christopher Wood of Morgantown , Elijah Flener and wife Payton Grubb Flener, Chloe Flener, and Solomon Flener all of Morgantown; one uncle Jim Butler wife Donna of Wooster, Ohio and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held at the Jones Funeral Chapel Wednesday November 4, 2015 at 2:00pm with Bro. Sam Dick officiating. Visitation will be held Tuesday November 3, 2015 from 3:00pm - 8:00pm and Wednesday 8:00am until funeral time at 2:00pm at the Jones Funeral Chapel.
