Bears claim District 12 championship with victory over Trinity (Whitesville)

The Butler County High School Bears Baseball team defeated Trinity (Whitesville) 6-3 Friday at BCHS to claim the District 12 Tournament title.

The Butler County Bears Baseball team captured the 12th District Championship with a 6-3 victory against Trinity (Whitesville) Friday afternoon at BCHS.

It was the first district title for second-year head coach Ben Grey, and an unlikely feat considering the team’s lower seeding in the tournament.

“It really was district championship or bust, we weren’t settling for second,” Grey said. “Over the course of the season we a lost a lot of close games, but we were able to pull it out today and get that district championship.”

Junior Blake Graham proved to be a spark plug for the Bears, going three-for-three at the plate, notching a double and two singles. In the District 12 opener Graham collected 17 strikeouts to help the Bears dispose of Edmonson County High School 10-2.

Grey said the team looks to carry the momentum from winning the District 12 Tournament to making some noise in the upcoming Region 3 Tournament.

“I expect us to do some damage that first game,” Grey said.

It will be the first time the combination of BCHS and Trinity (Whitesville) will represent District 12 in Region 3 tournament action. Both district champion and district runner-up advance to the region tournament.
