Andy Sullivan: Against The Grain

Jefferson Airplane, Jefferson Starship and Starship are one in the same.  “What’s that”, you say?

Patty Craig: A Slice of Time

My oldest daughter asked me to complete journal entries in a small book called Mom, Share Your Life with Me: A Daily Journal of Childhood Memories, and I hope to finish the journal this month. Recent questions included: “When did you put up your Christmas tree? Where did you get them? How did you decorate your trees?” I had not thought of Christmas trees as being a family tradition, but now I see that they are.

Cheryl Hughes: That Kind of Thanksgiving

It was that kind of Thanksgiving—the kind that can happen only in Alabama with Garey’s family.  There are too many dogs and too many people gathered together under one roof—Garey’s sister, Charlotte’s, roof—but we are all welcome and all happy to be under this particular roof.

Jarrod Jacobs: "Ruth Didn't Know"

I am sure most Bible students are familiar with Ruth, the Moabitess who was widowed, but followed her mother-in-law back to Bethlehem to live. Once there, she met and married Naomi’s kinsman, Boaz. From this union came Obed; and in time she became the great-grandmother of David. It is easy for us, having read the story, to focus upon Ruth being David’s great-grandmother, and all that this would imply in God’s plan for man’s salvation. In fact, Ruth is one of only four women mentioned in the earthly lineage of Christ (Matt. 1:5).

Sins of curriculum omission magnify need for school choice

While the proposed revisions to Kentucky’s social studies standards resemble something akin to the policy equivalent of a half-cooked turkey, they also highlight the need for more real choices when it comes to public education in the Bluegrass State.

It’s important, for instance, to most Kentucky families that their children learn about what a “patriot” is and what “patriotism” means. Yet those words are among 25 history subjects that don’t even warrant a mention in the proposed dumbed-down standards.

Out on a Limb: Be Careful Where You Park in Bowling Green!

John Embry

Be careful where you park in Bowling Green.  That's the advice I have this week for readers of Beech Tree News over the Thanksgiving holiday.  A statement like that warrants an explanation and boy do I have a good one!

Andy Sullivan: Against the Grain

Since Thanksgiving is Thursday, I thought it appropriate for a little background.  We begin with the origin of Thanksgiving.
The Pilgrims left Plymouth, England, on September 6, 1620. Their destination was The New World. Although filled with uncertainty and peril, it offered both civil and religious liberty.
For over two months, the 102 passengers braved the harsh elements of a vast storm-tossed sea. Finally, with firm purpose and a reliance on Divine Providence, the cry of “Land!” was heard.

Letter to Editor

W. Scott Ramsey President and Chief Executive Officer Warren Rural Electric Cooperative Corporation

President Obama and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) must rethink its proposed Clean Power Plan which imposes drastic new greenhouse gas rules for electricity generating power plants. If Congress cannot find a way to stop the EPA, electric utilities that are already struggling to keep up with the growing residential and commercial demand for electricity will be forced to shutter dozens of plants. Too many plants being retired at once will likely lead to volatile and unexpected price spikes for consumers in the years to come.

Cheryl Hughes: Unreasonable

When Garey and I were young in a very young marriage, I ordered tulip bulbs—seventy-two, to be exact.  The bulbs were on sale in one of those seed and plant catalogues they’re always sending you in the mail.  They were on sale, because it was late fall and fast approaching the cut-off date during which tulip bulbs could be planted in order to lift their little heads from the soil and bloom in time for spring.

Jarrod Jacobs: “What Is Your Attitude Toward The Bible?”

Attitude is defined as: “manner, disposition, feeling, position, etc., with regard to a person or thing” (Webster’s). I know there are many who possess a great attitude toward the Bible. Yet, not all men do. Some deny that it is truth (Jn. 17:17). Others deny that it is inspired (II Tim. 3:16-17). Such people discourage knowing the Bible among those who are influenced by them. Therefore, we have a generation of people who are ignorant of God’s word. What is your attitude toward the Bible? Are you interested in learning more about God’s word? Are you striving to live it daily?
