Witherspoon Extends Hit Streak to 13 Games 10-2 Loss

McGowan hits 13th homer in series-ending setback 

Aberdeen, Maryland– Grant Witherspoon extended his hit streak to 13 games in the Bowling Green Hot Rods (55-23) 10-2 loss to the Aberdeen Ironbirds (39-38) in the series finale on Sunday at Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen, Maryland. The Hot Rods will not be in action with Monday serving as a league-wide off day. 

The Ironbirds got to Hot Rods starter Zack Trageton in the first inning, taking a 4-0 lead after Chris Shaw hit a grand slam to take the lead. Jacson McGowan got Bowling Green on the board with a solo shot off Aberdeen starter Ignacio Feliz in the second, his 13th of the year, that cleared the center field batter’s eye and made it a 4-1 game.  

The Hot Rods got another run in the second against Feliz to make it a two-run game. Greg Jones led off with a single and ended up at third after stealing second and moving up on an errant throw. Witherspoon extended his hit streak to 13 games with an RBI single, making it a 4-2 game in the process. Aberdeen added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 6-2 lead and added four runs in the eighth, going on to a 10-2 win in the series finale. 

Trageton (5-2) tossed 3.1 innings while allowing six runs on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts in his second loss of the season. Michael Costanzo tossed 2.2 scoreless frames while allowing two this with three strikeouts. Angel Felipe allowed four runs (all unearned) on four hits with two strikeouts over 2.0 innings. 

Notes: Witherspoon extended his hit streak to 13 games… He had his 15th multi-hit effort… Jones had his 15th multi-hit game of the season…  Edwards set a new career-high with three walks… It’s the fourth time a Hot Rods hitter has had a three-walk game this season, which is the single-game high… RHP Tanner Dodson was promoted to AA Montgomery before Sunday’s game… McGowan has hit nine of his 13 homers on the road… The Hot Rods won the season series against Aberdeen 10-2… Monday is a league-wide off-day before the Hot Rods being a six-game series against the Wilmington Blue Rock in Wilmington, Delaware on Tuesday night.
