Wilcox settling in as new secretary for counseling department
Mrs. Tonya Wilcox is the new secretary for the guidance counselors at Butler County High School. She is a resident of Butler County and has worked as a para-educator for 12 years in BCMS, BCHS, and the Learning Center. Before being a secretary, she was a teachers’ aide, worked in special education, and before that she actually was a cosmetologist 28 years. She is always there ready to help a student in need.
Wilcox decided to make the switch to secretary because she worked at the high school before, enjoyed the students and staff, and because she loves seeing students and helping them to succeed.
The secretary assists the counselors, enters grades, answers phones, helps with scholarships, and gets students the information that they need. Assistance with schedule changes, scholarship information are also responsibilities of the position.
The best time to see her is 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Tonya is the mother of three with two grandchildren.
“I like my co-workers because we all work together for the students,” said Wilcox.
She feels very welcomed by everyone and everyone has been kind to her and she’s happy to be in this position. Some students might be scared to go to the counselor’s office but Mrs. Wilcox has some encouraging words to make that process easier for students.
“I’ve been a momma so I want them to know that I am here for whatever they need and I want them to know that I’m new here too so we can figure it out together,” said Wilcox.
