White steps down from City Council; cites “personal reasons”

Sterling White

Sterling White has resigned from his position on the Morgantown City Council.  Morgantown Mayor Billy Phelps said White told him that he was proud of the work that was accomplished during his four years on the council and he wished to thank everyone for their support.

In explaining his resignation, White released the following statement:

“To the citizens of Morgantown and my colleagues:

It has truly been an honor to serve as Councilman for the last four years. I chose to serve in this capacity only to attempt to help Morgantown and all its citizens. In 2016 there were some bleak choices and situations the city was facing. I am proud of so many things we as a body were able to accomplish to improve our outlook. I am currently working through some personal issues that I feel will not allow me to serve as councilman for the next term. I thank each and everyone who’s supported me and given me the opportunity to serve and those who kept me at task all the same. It is impossible to know what the future may hold from month to month and because of this I feel that it is the right thing to do to step down from my current position on December 31st as councilman in order to be transparent and forthcoming with those whom I’ve had the privilege to serve.”

White was elected to the Morgantown City Council in 2016 and joined the council in 2017.  White, along with other members of the Morgantown City Council, were re-elected without opposition in November.

City officials are in the process of choosing someone to fill White’s seat.

“The council will be picking the replacement and that replacement will fill the entire two-year term,” said Phelps.

The mayor has asked each city council member to submit one name and then to decide among those five individuals.

“But, that was just a recommendation; they can do it however they choose,” added Phelps.

The mayor stated that if the council followed his recommendation then he would call each one of the individuals chosen to see if they would be willing to fulfill the obligation.

Regarding White, Mayor Phelps said he wished him the “very best in his future endeavors.”  “He is a very dedicated city council member,” said Mayor Phelps.  “I’m proud of the hard work we were able to accomplish together during his term as a city council member.”

Basic requirements to serve on the Morgantown City Council include being at least 18-years of age and a resident of the city.
