White, Embry, and Gaskey take spots on Morgantown City Council; Trump, Paul cruise to victory in Butler County

Morgantown City Council will feature several new faces in January as three newcomers won positions, ousting two incumbents in process.  Leading the ticket was Sterling White with 407 votes; second place was Dustin "Hog" Embry with 399 votes; third place went to Russell Givens with 392 votes; Gary Southerland took fourth place with 382 votes; Sharon Johnson finished in fifth place with 370 votes; and Jason Gaskey grabbed the sixth and final spot on the council with 338 votes.

Current council member Ronald Givens tallied 328 votes and incumbent Dionne Cannon Merritt had 326 votes.  Todd Meredith finished with 194 votes.

Incumbent city council member Allen Meredith did not seek reelection.  

In the race for president, Republican Donald Trump easily dispatched Democrat Hillary Clinton.  Trump received 4,428 votes to Clinton's 947.  Libertarian Gary Johnson had 136 and Jill Stein of the Green Party had 11 votes.  

In the race for the United States Senate in Kentucky, incumbent Republican  Rand Paul won with 4,055 votes to Democrat Jim Gray's 1,444.  

Both Trump and Paul easily won their races statewide in Kentucky.  

Sterling White, top vote-getter in the race for Morgantown City Council, said he was both "humbled and delighted to have been elected to the city council by the great people of Morgantown."  

White continued, "I have enjoyed the experience and getting to meet with everyone and to hear all their ideas.  I'm ready to hit the ground running and get to work on improving the future of Morgantown," added White.  "I want to congratulate all the other candidates who chose to put themselves out there and I look forward to working with the new council." 

Dustin "Hog" Embry said he was ready to work for Morgantown.

"I just want to thank the wonderful citizens of giving me a chance to serve them on the city council.  I'm ready to work for our city."  

Jason Gaskey said he was very grateful for the support he received from voters.

"I would like to humbly thank the citizens of Morgantown that voted and supported me.  I am very grateful," said Gaskey.   

The new Morgantown City Council will take office in January.
