Dear Parents,
The opening day for students is just around the corner, and it’s hard to believe that another summer has passed and the beginning of another school year is fast approaching. Like myself, I’m sure parents, and students are eagerly preparing for the 2014-2015 school year as they begin shopping for those new school clothes, backpacks, and lunchboxes.
The beginning of this school year will be bittersweet for me as I begin my 16th and final year as Principal of Morgantown Elementary School before my retirement at Christmas of this year. Even though this may be my final year, I can say without a shadow of a doubt, I believe this will be one of the finest years in our school history.
Over the past several weeks, our custodial staff has been working diligently, along with volunteers from Andrea’s Mission, to get our building cleaned and ready for a new year. Our teachers have also been preparing for the upcoming year as well by attending many different professional development workshops along with preparing their rooms.
This year, Morgantown Elementary’s theme will be “The Wild West, Riding into the Proficiency Sunset”. Our focus, as always, continues to be that every student continually shows growth academically as each moves toward becoming a Proficient student and citizen. To move students toward proficiency, we have seen the introduction at Morgantown Elementary of Math in Focus and Reading Street. This year we will be introducing the new Next Generation Science Standards to all students at all grade levels. We will be having Open Houses for each grade level again this year prior to the opening of school. Each OPEN HOUSE will be at 5:30 p.m. We will first meet in the gym where I will address the students and their families, after which students and parents will be released to their respective homerooms to meet their teachers. Those attending the OPEN HOUSE will need to enter through the rear entrance of the school directly into the 5th grade hall.
•    Kindergarten OPEN HOUSE will be held Tuesday, July 29th
•    1st and 2nd grade OPEN HOUSE will be held Thursday, July 31st
•    3rd, 4th, and 5th grade OPEN HOUSE will be held Monday, August 4th.
We would like to take this opportunity to express our best wishes to one of our staff members who has retired: Mrs. Cheryl Gilstrap, 5th Grade Reading Teacher at Morgantown Elementary. I am sure that Mrs.Gilstrap will enjoy her newfound time with family and friends, especially her granddaughters. We would also like to welcome the new additions to the Morgantown Elementary faculty: Mrs. Whitney Vincent will be our new first grade teacher, Ms. Chelsea Tutko will be teaching fifth grade reading, and finally Mrs. Adra Skaggs will be our new teacher in kindergarten.
One of the things that continues to be of the utmost importance here at Morgantown Elementary is your child’s safety. We want to remind parents that they must always sign in at the front office when visiting Morgantown Elementary. Also, students must be dropped off in the morning at the back gym doors, NOT the front of the school this is due to heavy bus and car traffic.
