VFW Post 5837 Ladies Auxiliary Declares November 9-15 “Buddy Poppy Week”
Buddy Poppy and Youth chairman, Jane Eaton-Henderson visited the courthouse on Thursday November 7 have a proclamation signed by David Fields, County Judge Executive and Linda Keown, Mayor of Morgantown. Declaring November 9 - 15 “Buddy Poppy” week in honor of our Veterans. The proclamation asks: all Butler County citizens to remember, honor and thank a veteran for his or her service, at home or abroad, to insure our freedoms during this week of honor. It is so easy to forget what these men and women past, present, and sadly, future have given up for our freedoms.
Since 1922 the Veterans of Foreign Wars in the United States has conducted an annual distribution of “Buddy” Poppies to raise funds for its charitable programs on behalf of the needy and disabled veterans and the surviving family members of deceased veterans.
This little red flower is given freely but when giving a donation all is strictly accounted for and entirely dedicated to veterans welfare.
The services made possible through donations go to ALL needy veterans ,active service members and their families-not just those who are members of Veterans of Foreign Wars.
The famous poem by John McCrea, “In Flanders Fields” gave birth to the Buddy Poppy.
So, next time someone offers you that little innocent little red flower you will understand its importance.
As the tag states, “Lest we forget”! “Lets give little toward those who gave so much for us!”
