VFW Ladies Auxiliary Promotes Awareness of the Buddy Poppy

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5837 Ladies Auxiliary with the assistance of Ms Linda Tyree and Ms JoLynn Reed will hold a program on the Buddy Poppy on Monday September 24 in the cafeteria for the 2-3 graders at 9:00-9:30 and the 4-5 graders at, 10:00-10:30. This year it was decided to add the 2-3 grades to the Buddy Poppy program and Art for Heroes, in promoting of the awareness of the Buddy Poppy and what it stands for. Not wanting to leave any students out, the Ladies Auxiliary also donated 125 certificates to the first graders at Morgantown Elementary who have learned the Pledge of Allegiance.

This year, Ms Russ, who is the Americanism/Citizen Education Chairman and Ms Eaton-Henderson, who is the Youth Activities Chairman and Ladies Auxiliary President, Ms Lynda Knight  will conduct the Buddy Poppy program along with Ms Linda Tyree Monday September 24 at Morgantown Elementary .

Last year, Ms Lois Russ Ms Jane Eaton-Henderson and Ladies Auxiliary President, Lynda Knight visited the 4-5 grade classrooms to promote Buddy Poppy awareness, and spoke to them about the “Buddy Poppy”.  Each student was given a Buddy Poppy, a pamphlet on the Buddy Poppy and a requirements list. Ms Linda Tyree explained the requirements, and, if chosen, what they would win.  Each 4-5 grade student in order to participate this year must share with five people what they have learned about the Buddy Poppy and write a 50 words or less essay on, "Our Founding Fathers "; if you could write a letter to one of our Founding Fathers what would you like to tell them? Just think of the changes that have occurred in the world since they dipped their quill pens in ink wells and signed their names to the Constitution!

Those students who are selected as Buddy Poppy Good Citizens will be participating in the following; the annual “Butler County Salutes our Veterans “program, November 9 at 9:00 A.M. at BCHS and the annual Veterans Day Parade November 9 at 2:00 P.M... They will also record the pledge for WLBQ radio station the pledge will be re-played on the radio. The four Buddy Poppy Good Citizens will also take part in the Festival of Trees, Flag Day and Memorial Day activities.

Ms Eaton-Henderson, chairman of the Buddy Poppy Committee, was delighted when Ms Russ, came up with the idea of a way to promote the awareness of the Buddy Poppy, its origination and what it stands for while making students more aware of the thanks due our veterans from all wars who insure that we continue to enjoy our freedoms. Freedom is not free and the price tag is high but that fact is often lost as we live our privileged lives.

On November 9, at the Veterans Day Program, the Buddy Poppy Good Citizens will be handing Poppies out and giving information on the Buddy Poppy.  Listen and you might be surprised! There is a lot to know about that little red poppy that is made by veterans in VA hospitals across our country!

This year, the Ladies Auxiliary VFW Post 5837 Art Contest, “Art for Heroes” subject for all 4th, 5th grade students is “Honoring America” and subject for the 2-3 graders is American Flag or Buddy Poppy.   The final winners will be chosen at the Butler County Chapter NSDAR Veterans Breakfast on Saturday, November 10 at 9:00 A.M. at Butler County High School by the Veterans and these winners will be announced in Beechtree news, WLBQ and the Banner.

Please come out and join us at the annual Salute Our Veterans Day program November 9 at 9:30 AM at the Butler County High School gym. All veterans are invited to the annual Butler County Chapter NSDAR Veterans Breakfast on Saturday, November 10 at 9:00 AM at Butler County High School commons and the annual VFW Post 5837 Veterans Day parade at 2:00.
