United Way of Southern Kentucky to Help "Feed the Need"

United Way of Southern Kentucky (UWSK) will hold a region wide food drive aptly titled “Feed the Need” in Allen, Barren, Butler, Edmonson, Logan, Simpson, and Warren counties starting today and ending April 13th.

“Feed the Need” was created in 2009 in response to the increased need in our communities for basic resources as a result of the economic downturn. After speaking with the local food pantries that have benefited from the drive over the last three years, it is abundantly clear that the need for this drive continues this year. Since its inception, United Way’s "Feed the Need" Food Drive has collected 203,216 non-perishable items for local food banks in Southern Kentucky.

Companies, organizations, and groups in Allen, Barren, Butler, Edmonson, Logan, Simpson and Warren Counties can participate once again by holding internal food drives starting today through April 13th. Food drives will also be held again at all Houchens Market, Save-A-Lot, IGA, Food Lion, Kroger, Piggly Wiggly, Dollar General Market, and Walmart locations in all seven participating counties April 12th-13th. Volunteers are needed to pass out flyers and manage donations at these store locations on Friday, April 12th 10am-6pm and Saturday, April 13th 9am-1pm. Volunteers are also needed to help sort and package donations at the main drop off and sorting site in each county.

All donations will benefit food banks in the county in which the donations were collected. The benefiting food banks include Barren River Area Safe Space, Community Action of Southern Kentucky, Community Relief Fund, Food from the Heart, Morgantown Mission, Good Samaritan of Logan and Simpson Counties, and The Salvation Army.

If you are interested in helping to “Feed the Need”, please visit a participating store location during the food drive and make a purchase to donate needed food items.  If you would like to volunteer to help collect or sort food donations or to run an internal food drive within your company, group, or organization, contact the United Way office at 270-843-3205 or log onto the United Way of Southern Kentucky website at www.liveunitedtoday.com.
