Tyree named President of KY School Counselor Association

Linda Tyree

Linda Tyree, Counselor at Morgantown Elementary School, has been named the President of the Kentucky School Counselor Association, a non-profit organization that represents school counselors throughout the state, most of whom work in K-12 educational settings.

Mrs. Tyree has been employed by the Butler County School system since 1984, working as a clerical assistant at Butler County High School from 1984-1987, then completing her teaching degree and returning in 1990 as a fifth-grade social studies teacher.  In 2007, she achieved her Rank I in School Counseling and began working as the Intermediate School Counselor at Morgantown Elementary.

She is a member of the Green River Regional Educational Cooperative’s Crisis Recovery team, has served as the Elementary Vice President of KSCA, and has been actively advocating for School Counselors throughout the state.

Mrs. Tyree spoke during the June 26th  Federal Commission on School Safety listening session.  The Commission, led by the U.S. Secretary of Education, Attorney General, Secretary of Health and Human Services, and Secretary of Homeland Security has been charged with quickly providing meaningful and actionable recommendations to keep kids safe at school.  Linda spoke about how School Counselors can play a vital role in delivering Social/Emotional Learning and mental health support, taking a proactive approach to school safety.

On July 9th, she was joined by Mary Lee Cooper, KSCA’s High School Vice President, and fellow Marshall County crisis responder, at the Interim Joint Commission on Education meeting and the Safe Schools Working Group meeting held at Trigg County High School.  Both will participate in a panel discussion at the August and September Commission meetings as well.

Most recently, Linda joined state leaders from around the country for the annual American School Counselor Association conference.  She brought Kentucky’s voice to the national level by voting on issues at the 2018 Delegate Assembly in Los Angeles, CA.

Mrs. Tyree is excited about leading KSCA into its 50th year.  “I’m excited to work with our governing board to increase membership, promote more effective member benefits, provide regional professional development opportunities, and help revitalize Kentucky’s annual conference - the only one in the state designed specifically for School Counselors.”  Mrs. Tyree will also be focused on promoting safe schools. “There’s a huge focus right now on school safety, and we want School Counselors to be part of the national conversation.  We play a vital role in promoting positive mental health.  When we focus on social-emotional learning, everyone benefits!  Our schools will move away from simply reacting to negative behaviors or events to hopefully preventing them.”

Mrs. Tyree is married to Ronnie Tyree, and they have two adult sons, Josh (Chelsey) and Jordan (Taylor), and a 4-year-old grandson, Jace.  They live in the Davis Crossroads community of Butler County.
