Two vehicle accident sends Sheriff's Deputy to the hospital

UPDATE:The  2001 Hyundai was driven by Kayla Phelps, 18, of Beaver Dam, according to a release from the state police. Phelps and her passengers, Melinda Phelps, 18, and Cindy Cockrel, 39, both of Morgantown, refused medical treatment at the scene. Deputy Hooten was taken by ambulance to The Medical Center, where he was treated and released. KSP Trooper Brian McKinney investigated the accident.

ORIGINAL STORY: Just after four this evening, a two vehicle collision occurred in the 200 block of W GL Smith St. in Morgantown sending a member of the Butler County Sheriff's Department to the hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

According to an eyewitness, Deputy Bobby Hooten was heading south on W GL Smith St. when his police cruiser was struck by a Hyundai Tiburon driven by an unidentified female. The Hyundai was northbound and attempting to turn into King Drug and Homecare when she pulled into the path of Hooten's cruiser.

The wreck shut down W GL Smith St from the intersection with S. Teddy St. to Old Logansport Road while crews worked to remove both vehicles and clean up the scene.

Kentucky State Trooper Brian McKinney is leading the investigation. Also responding to the scene were the Butler County Sheriff's Department, Morgantown Police Department, Butler County EMS, Morgantown Volunteer Fire Department, and Butler County Rescue Squad.

Beech Tree News will post more information as it becomes available.
