WASHINGTON – September 2024 – Today, Guidehouse’s Energy, Sustainability, and Infrastructure segment announced the winners of the 2024 Generation Knowledge Service (GKS) Plant Operational Excellence Awards. The awards recognize power plants that have demonstrated excellence in cost and operational management, as well as improved performance and reliability. Eligible plants were separated by technology, with coal plants requiring >50% utilization and combined cycle plants requiring >30%.

The top and runner-up plants for each category are: Top and Runner-up Coal Plants

• Top performer: Walter Scott Energy Center, located in Council Bluffs, Iowa –MidAmerican Energy

• Runner-up: Huntington Power Station, located in Huntington, Utah – PacifiCorp Top and Runner-up Combined Cycle Plants

• Top performer: Paradise Combined Cycle Plant, located in Drakesboro, Kentucky - Tennessee Valley Authority

• Runner-up: Currant Creek Power Station, located in Mona, Utah – PacifiCorp

“We are pleased to recognize Tennessee Valley Authority, PacifiCorp, and MidAmerican Energy, the owners and operators of these highperforming plants, as industry leaders in today’s increasingly competitive environment,” says Bruce Hamilton, director of Generation Services at Guidehouse. “In addition to the need for reliability and low cost, the new dimension of flexibility required in a market with larger amounts of variable generation tests the ingenuity of plant operators.” The 2024 GKS Plant Operational Excellence Awards are based on a review of cost and performance data over the most recent five-year period (2019-2023). Winners were selected after a detailed analysis of cost and performance data from Guidehouse’s industry-leading GKS database, which contains data on more than 233,000 MW of coal-fired generation and over 95,000 MW of combined cycle generation. The analysis of cost and performance includes a weighted comparison of non-fuel operation and maintenance costs and availability and reliability measures during the evaluation period. Winners must also finish in the top half for safety performance.
