Turn Morgantown PINK

Morgantown faded to pink early Sunday afternoon with the intention of raising awareness of breast cancer as well as remembering those who have lost their lives to the disease. This year's program was hosted on the lawn of the Butler County Courthouse. Events began at 2 p.m.

Becky Hankins began the event by thanking multiple sponsors that made the event possible and welcoming the guests. This was followed by a prayer led by Anita Cardwell.

A group of three young women - Rachel Johnson, Lennon Johnson, and Alison Kurfis - performed a cover of "I'm Gonna Love you Through it" by Martina McBride.

The designated speaker this year was Kathy McKinney Towe. She gave an inspirational and heartfelt story regarding her experience with breast cancer and her pride in being a survivor.

There were many other survivors present at the event, and they were also recognized. Elizabeth Porter read the names of those people while Audrey Porter presented them with a sash and a rose.  The survivors were given an opportunity to make statements. Many good statements were made, mostly pertaining to the importance of early detection and the regular scheduling of mammograms.

Following this, a skit was performed by Tina Porter's 5th grade Relay for Life team. The skit regarded many common misconceptions with breast cancer.

Tina Porter led the remembrance ceremony in which she called the names of those who have lost their lives to breast cancer. One representative for each name was called to the front where they lit a candle. This was followed by a moment of silence.  After the moment of silence, the three vocalists came to the front to perform an a capella of Amazing Grace.

Balloons were gathered and released after this, followed by the serving of cupcakes and fruit punch. Everyone was given the opportunity to run laps around the courthouse, although no one did.
