Treasurer Ball assails targeting of churches by governor

Kentucky State Treasurer Allison Ball

LEXINGTON, KY– According to testimony this morning (Thursday) at a legislative committee hearing, COVID restrictions were enforced vigorously on Kentucky churches, while law enforcement was directed not to enforce them on protesters. In her testimony before the Interim Judiciary Committee meeting this morning, Kentucky State Treasurer Allison Ball testified that a Treasury Department investigation revealed several similar inconsistencies in enforcement of COVID restrictions.

"The politicized enforcement of COVID restrictions by the Governor's office should be a concern to every Kentuckian," said Martin Cothran, spokesman for The Family Foundation. "To target churches for enforcement of meeting restrictions and then exempt favored political protesters is a clear violation of Constitutional protections."

Treasurer Ball's testimony covered findings from an investigation by her office that discovered directives from the administration to police that included specific harassment of churches in ways that did not apply to other types of organizations. In response to several questions about "balancing" the Constitution with other interests, she defended her view that the Constitution applies at all times, particularly difficult ones, pointing out that the Founders were quite familiar with pandemics.
