A Token of Their Gratitude

Droopy's token from J.A. Tanner's.

For Howard “Droopy “ Drake, owner of Drakes Farm Service, the recent estate sale of Jack Moore on West Roberts Street in Morgantown seems to have paid off, even if  for only one cent. Hidden inside a jar of buttons Drake purchased was an old merchandise token valued at one cent toward the purchase in any merchandise provided the purchase was made at the J. A. Tanner Dry-goods Store here in Morgantown.

Back of token.

Photos in the book “Images of America-Butler County” by Roger Givens and Nancy Richey show that Five Seasons Flowers and Gifts now occupies the building which once housed J. A. Tanner and Company. Though the token does not contain a date, an area advertisement for Tanner ran as late as September 1901.
