Terrapin Race features 152 terrapins, draws large crowd

The 2014 Green River Catfish Festival Terrapin Race featured 12 heat races and a championship round before Ty Griffin and terrapin #4 took home the $100 top prize and trophy. Riley Turci's terrapin #63 finished second; Zachary Gwathney with terrapin #139 came in third. The Terrapin Race was held Friday, July 4, at the Charles Black Park in Morgantown.

Cassia Lodge #272 F&AM organized and sponsored the event with support from Hughes and Coleman, Jones Funeral Chapel, Henderson Land Surveying, Turnertown Farms, and Tim and Kathy Thomas.

With a total of 152 terrapins participating, the event featured 12 individual races (heats). The 1st place terrapin in each heat advanced to the championship heat. Each heat paid out $15 (1st), $10 (2nd), and $5 (3rd). The championship heat, in addition to trophies, awarded $100 for 1st, $50 for 2nd, and $25 for 3rd. Hughes and Coleman provided bonus money for each individual heat, as well as for the championship heat. Jones Funeral Chapel gave a Sno-Shack coupon to all kids who brought a terrapin to the race. Turnertown Farms provided free drinks for everyone.
