Students Attend SkillsUSA State Competition

Last week while on Spring Break, four members of the Butler County High School SkillsUSA chapter attended the SkillsUSA state competition located in Louisville.  The students were taken by Jason Sharp, the Industrial Maintenance Instructor at the Butler County Area Technology Center.

SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers, and industry that have one common goal, to ensure America has a skilled workforce.  SkillUSA is made up of over 300,000 students and 13,000 school chapters throughout the country.  To qualify for the SkillsUSA competition, the students had previously competed in their District Competition at SouthCentral Kentucky Community and Technical College (formerly known as Bowling Green Technical College).  A second place finish or higher was necessary for the student to obtain a spot at the state competition.  The students that received this honor were Alex Hudnall, Damon Cockrell, Paul Staples, and Zach Felty.

With over 900 students in attendance, the boys from Butler County faced a lot of tough competition.  Butler County brought home two medals, both of which were obtained by Zach Felty.  Felty placed 3rd in both the HVAC and Job Skill Demo A competitions.  In other competitions was Alex Hudnall, competing in Industrial Motor Control, Damon Cockrell, competing in Carpentry, and Paul Staples, who competed in a welding competition.

When asked about the competition, Jason Sharp was pleased with his students, saying they very professional throughout the week long competition.
