Sterling White for City Council

I’d like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to the fine citizens of Morgantown.  If you don’t already know me then maybe you know my family. I’m the son of Bruce and Brenda White of Little Muddy and the paternal grandson of Onva “Short” White and Joan White of Morgantown and maternal grandson Joyce and Erdine Ward of McKendry Chapel Road. My great grandfather Otis White and Betty were also from Morgantown.
I’m a candidate for Morgantown City Council and I’m 38 years old. My wife Jade and I are the proud parents of two sons, Chandler and Lawson White. I’ve worked as a heavy equipment operator in the coal mining industry until April 2016 when my mine was forced to shut down.  I’m currently pursuing my bachelor’s degree at Western Kentucky University in Systems Management with a concentration in Environmental Health Science. I am on schedule to graduate in May 2017.
I’ve always had a desire to serve our great community and that’s why I decided to run for city council. I prayed about it and discussed it with my wife and family before deciding to enter the race. The future of Morgantown and of our children are my main focus. I want to give back to the community that I love so much by helping to improve their opportunities moving forward.
I’m an advocate for fiscal conservatism and for being a good steward of the people’s tax dollars. I feel very strongly that as hard as our citizen’s work for their money, that it’s our duty as local officials to work every bit as hard at managing these funds appropriately. I do not believe that we can tax and spend our way to prosperity. I feel very strongly that with our feeble economy that that is a dangerous path to go down.
I want to be a voice for the people who aren’t able to speak up for themselves. I’m determined to help our young people who are our future to have opportunities and to improve their quality of life any way that I can. I think we must work hand in hand with our school system, Community Action Agency, Head Start, the Bears Den, the Boys and Girls Club, Adult Education, Drug Free Butler County, and any other groups that are working to improve the future of our workforce. I believe a community that isn’t willing to invest in their future, is a community with no future and I think corporations would have a similar opinion. I’d like to see us improve our workforce development efforts to help provide valuable training for our people who want a hand up not a hand out. We do have a good workforce. We have talented trades people, engineers, educators, and on and on. While some of these folks do work here at home many have to commute to other cities to find quality jobs. I’d like to see that trend changed and keep our local talent local.
I’d like to see us improve our park to make it a more appealing draw for tournaments, concerts, and while we’re at it let’s make the Catfish festival great again! I know I’ve laid out many ideas here you’ll have to forgive me, I have big plans for Morgantown. There’s even more if you’ll go to my face book page Sterling White for City Council or @FocusedOnOurFuture on facebook.com. I’ve not backed away from putting myself or my ideas out there. I believe the people deserve to hear them if you have any.  I ask for your vote on November the 8th to help me get to work for Morgantown. VOTE #8 NOV 8!
