South Central Kentucky Open Jobs Report for September

There are currently 7,152 open positions in the 10-county region and 9,347 unemployed. Going out 50 miles from our region, the number of open positions jumps to 57,884.

The unemployment rate has been shrinking across the county, region, state, and nation since March laregley due to a shrinking labor force speading the drop in unemployment. To be considered “unemployed” a person must be jobless, available to work, and looking for a job. IF a person has not looked for a job in the past four weeks, the Bureau of Labor and Statistics removes them from the labor force and does not count them as unemployed anymore. So, the unemployment rate is a function of the number of unemployed people divided by the number of people in the labor force and both of those are impacted when people stop looking for a job.
