Soccer: Bears drop home match to Muhlenberg County

MORGANTOWN — Butler County was limited offensively as Muhlenberg County pulled away to win 7-1 in a non-district boys' soccer match on Monday, Sept. 11. 
The Bears and Mustangs are rivals from bordering districts. 
Edwar Melendez scored four goals and dished out one assist to lead Muhlenberg County to the non-district win.
In addition to Melendez, Muhlenberg County's offensive attack included Hayden Ashby (two goals, two assists), Nate Harper (one goal, one assist), Brady Noffisinger (one assist) and Oak Shain (one assist).
Defensively, Shain and Carter Knowles split time at goalkeeper for Muhlenberg County, combining to record 15 saves while limiting Butler County to one goal. 
Irvin Sanchez scored Butler County's lone goal in the match.
Goalkeeper Landon Beatty recorded 22 saves for Butler County in its loss. 
The Bears and Mustangs met for the first time in the 2023 boys' high school soccer season.
Butler County is scheduled to visit Russellville on Thursday, Sept. 14. The start time for the Butler County-Russellville boys' soccer match is set for 7 p.m.
