Frankfort, Ky. — Senator C.B. Embry (R-Morgantown) was presented with the 2020 Humane Legislator Award on Tuesday afternoon, recognizing him for his work on animal protection issues, including his 2020 Regular Session sponsorship of Senate Bill (SB) 21, legislation allowing veterinarians to report suspected animal abuse.

Prior to SB 21’s passage, Kentucky was the only state in the country that prevented veterinarians from making such a report. The bill passed both chambers unanimously with overwhelming, bipartisan support.

The Humane Legislator award is presented annually to legislators across the country to recognize their work on key animal protection issues. Todd Blevins, Kentucky State Director for the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), presented Senator Embry with the award:

“We are so thankful to Senator Embry for his work to help Kentucky move forward on animal protection issues,” said Blevins. “Animal protection is  truly a bipartisan issue, and we appreciate Senator Embry’s leadership in his cham ber and his caucus.”

“I am humbled and honored to receive the 2020 Humane Legislator award,” said Senator Embry. “Senate Bill 21 was an overdue piece of legislation for the Commonwealth, as it includes commonsense language that allows veterinarians the legal means necessary to report animal abuse. It was encouraging to see its support and passage last session. I look forward to working alongside my colleagues in the legislature to prevent animal abuse and keep moving Kentucky in the right direction. Thank you to Kentucky State Director Todd Blevins and the rest of the HSUS state team for this award.”
