Second Chances By: Andy Sullivan

The first full week of 2013 brings not only us a chance to start fresh, but also a new start to our favorite shows.  In the first case I will describe shows that were cancelled on one network only to be brought back by another.  Cougar Town has been a favorite of mine since its inception in 2009. It had gained a cult following but was never a ratings bonanza.  ABC cancelled the show after three seasons. Late last year, it was announced that TBS had picked up the show.  Expect the same show that was on ABC, no changes in dynamic or cast.
Television shows have switched networks in the past.  From June 1, 2009-January 22, 2010, NBC made a disastrous move, shifting Conan O’Brien from the 11:35 slot to the much coveted 10:35 Tonight Show position. Needing something for Jay Leno, they gave him the equally disastrous “Jay Leno Show” that aired four nights a week from 9-10 pm.  Both floundered, with the bigger deal having been made of Conan’s epic fail on the Tonight Show.  In fact, Conan was banished from NBC but turned up several months later on, ironically, TBS.
Conan and Leno are both thriving, albeit both are expected to get a thinner audience with the addition of Jimmy Kimmel at 10:35 beginning January 8th.  As for me, my allegiance will move from The Late Show with David Letterman to Jimmy Kimmel.  I will tivo Letterman, however.  I was never a huge Jay Leno fan, and from what I read neither is Kimmel.
Shows getting a second chance on another network are nothing new.  Family Matters ran on ABC from 1989-1997.  In ’97, CBS bought the show rights, along with its Friday companion Step By Step.  Family Matters would finish its run on CBS.  Truthfully, I’d forgotten that fact.  Legendary show Taxi(18 Emmy wins) was cancelled by ABC only to have NBC pick it up for its final season.  NBC cancelled Scrubs, only to have ABC pick it up for its final season.  Tea Leoni had a show called The Naked Truth in the ‘90’s that was cancelled by ABC but picked up by NBC.  Two cast members you may remember were George Wendt (Norm from Cheers) and Holland Taylor(Evelyn Harper from Two and a Half Men).  Much like us in the New Year, many shows past and present get second chances.  That kind of makes you wonder what show is next in this game of network Ping-Pong.
