SEASON PREVIEW: Bears' goals include district championship and regional run in 2016-17

For Butler County Bears' head basketball coach Calvin Dockery, the goals are clear-cut: Continue to make progress, win a district championship, and make a run in the region. Butler County, 12-15 last season, has clearly made steps in that direction, winning the 12th District in three of the past four seasons.

The Bears, last season, defeated Edmonson County 77-68 in the first round of the 12th District Tournament and then beat Grayson County 53-49 to win the title. Butler County lost to Breckinridge County 81-57 in the first round of the Third Region Tournament.

"We just hope to continually progress as we move through a very demanding schedule," said Dockery. "As always our goal is to win the district, which will be extremely competitive, and then make a regional run. We want this to be the year we get by that first round regional game and get to a final four scenario," added Dockery.

The Bears lost one player to graduation - guard Austin Nave.

"Austin's defensive intensity will definitely be missed. He became a good leader for our younger guys last year."

Coach Dockery identifies several key returning players that will be called on to contribute in a big way this season. They include Rex Henderson, Baylee Anderson, Blake Graham, Dilan McCoy, Kenten Flener, Will Moore, Caleb Beasley, and Brennan Grubb.

The coach said his 2016-17 schedule is a challenging one but he is confident that the high level of competition will pay off down the road.

"We have a very challenging schedule this year. Opening up with Paudcah Tilghman, a team that could win their region. We have Breckinridge, Daviess, Ohio, Madisonville North Hopkins, Nelson County, and then Buckhorn on day one of the BTN/WLBQ Christmas Classic. Buckhorn played in last year's Sweet 16 and all of these games are before Christmas," said Dockery. "After Christmas we get into district play right out of the gate with two districts games the first week of January. We have some tough games in January highlighted by North Oldham, McLean, and LEAD Academy from Tennessee. In February we have tough games with Muhlenberg, Glasgow, Breckinridge, and a good Hopkins County Central team," added Dockery.

Joining Dockery's coaching staff is Steve McLean (varsity assistant coach), Elijah Flener (JV coach), Zeke Woodcock and Chad Bratcher (freshmen coaches).
