School Board Reviews Construction Projects

The Butler County Board of Education met in a special session on Thursday, May 28, at 7pm to discuss and approve construction phase documents and the BG-3 Statement of Probable Cost as presented by JKS Architecture. Documents and sample construction materials such as the replacement ceiling tiles for bathrooms were provided for board members to examine to help provide a picture of the outcome of the remodels, and facilitate understanding on the dominate needs of the schools to be remodeled.

Questions were asked about accessibility and the entrance into certain doorways and stairways, and there was curiosity over how much some doorways could be widened before running into issues. The possibility of changing a set of stairs to an AD Accessibility ramp or lift was discussed, but dismissed due to the limits of the space.  There will be new drinking fountains throughout the facility, including ADA fountains.

Some of the changes at Butler County High School would be remodeling bathrooms, adding and altering some lock features in the school to bring them to code, and adding a curb to replace the gravel strip in front of the building: “It’s basically a safety feature. If we had to get an ambulance or emergency vehicle… so we’re just going to eliminate any cars parking there.” Superintendant Howard stated. They will also be deepening drainage ditches in the front. Better ditches would increase the redirection of rainwater away from the roads, keeping the roads in better condition longer. They would also limit the ability of vehicles to drive through the adjacent lot.
They will also be revamping the exterior lighting, including updated spotlights and new light poles.
After over an hour of discussion and demonstration, both motions were approved. Pending state involvement, construction bids are expected shortly, and the next phase of remodeling will be closer to actualization.
