School Board recognizes students, approves Dec. 17th and 18th as make-up days

 The Butler County Board of Education met on Tuesday, December 11, at 6:30 PM at the Butler County Education Complex. All members were present: Amy Hood, Delbert Johnson, Debbie Hammers, Aimee Sanders, and Ryan Daugherty.

 Chairperson Hood called the regular meeting to order. The agenda was approved after adding two items. The minutes of the November 13th regular meeting were approved. The board approved the treasurer’s report and payment of monthly bills. Finance Officer Eric Elms reported the balance at the beginning of the month as $1,063,285.35 and the balance at the close of the month as $2,237,428.35.

 The Board recognized Ernest Lee for receiving a Georgetown University soccer scholarship. Lee thanked his parents, past coaches and others who have supported him and his team.

Also recognized were BCHS Y Chapter Students who attended the Kentucky Youth Assembly: Nathaniel Henderson, Tyler Lynch, Kobe Annis, Bodie Hammer, Bailey Collins, Macauley Hampton, Camryn Newland, Annie Locke, and Samantha Henderson.

 Superintendent Scott Howard reported some of the past month’s activities. He mentioned the Teen Summit that several students attended at Bowling Green Junior High and the superintendents’ webcast – one way to keep superintendents informed about topics such as graduation requirements. Myra Swift attended the Substance Abuse Regional Forum and will report to the Board at a later date. The Dual Credit Scholarship Ceremony was held recently. Howard said that Butler County students hold 428 dual-credit enrollments and noted that students have 15 opportunities to earn college credit while in high school. He thanked Delta Faucet Company and United Way for the financial support of the scholarships and the high school staff for their work on behalf of students. Superintendent Howard attended the BCSNA Christmas Dinner and enjoyed being with the cafeteria ladies, commenting that it takes everyone to educate students. He also attended the KASS Annual Conference – the superintendents’ conference in Lexington. He was able to speak with the Commissioner and with some legislators, sharing his concerns.

 

Under the Communication portion of the agenda, the Board was provided with information regarding the following topics:

 

·         Leadership Meeting and Lunch – Superintendent Howard

 

·         New Graduation Requirements – Superintendent Howard

 

·         FY 19 Butler County Board of Education Monthly Meeting Schedule – Superintendent Howard (Two options: Monday or Tuesday nights.)

 

·         FY 19 Calendar Revision – December 17th-18th – Make Up Days


 

·         FY 20 Calendar Committee Recommendations – Robert Tuck (Provided survey results and explained non-traditional instructional, NTI, days.)

 

·         Presentation of FY 18 Butler County Schools Audit Report – Shannon West, representing Carr, Riggs and Ingram CPAs (West stated that the district earned a very good audit report.)

 

·         TalentEd Absence Management, Hire Pro and Records Pro Program – Travis Johnson

 

·         FY 19 Kindergarten Scores – Sarah McKee (McKee reported that the 2018 Butler County kindergarten readiness was 61.8 %, while the state average was 50.8 %.)

 

·         Revised Critical Incident Response Manual – Mallory Hart, Erin Morris, Bethney Salmon and Linda Tyree

 

·         SBDM Minute

 

·         School Budgets

 

·         Transportation Report

 

 In the Consent Agenda portion of the meeting, the following items were approved with no discussion:

 

·         Approved BCHS Girls Basketball Trip Request to Attend the Murray Bank Holiday Classic at Calloway County High School in Murray, Kentucky on December 27th-29th, 2018

 

·         Approved BCHS Yearbook Out-Of-State Trip Request to Visit Opry Mills in Nashville, Tennessee on December 7th, 2018

 

·         Approved Spring 2019 WKU Student Teacher Assignment Requests

 

·         Approved FMLA Request for MES Cook

 

·         Approved Revised Critical Incident Response Manual

 

·         Approved BCMS 2020 Spring Break Trip to Chicago and 2021 Trip to the Presidential Inauguration

 

·         Approved Payment to Harshaw Trane for Application 2 of the Energy Project

 

During the Student Support Services portion of the meeting, the following items were approved individually:

 

·         Approved FY 18 Butler County Schools Audit Report

 

·         Approved Revised Butler County Schools 2015 Renovation BG1

 

·         Approved FY 19 Butler County Board of Education Monthly Meeting Schedule (Tuesday schedule.)

 

·         Approved TalentEd Absence Management, Hire, and Records Pro Program effective January 1, 2019

 

·         Approved FY 19 Calendar Revision Using December 17th-18th as Make Up Days

 

·         Approved FY 20 Out-of-District Contracts with Surrounding School Systems

 

·         Approved FY 20 Butler County Schools Calendar (Proposal #1: first day for students, August 7; last day for students, May 18. Non-traditional instructional days were not approved with the calendar.)

Within the Student Instructional Services portion of the meeting, Ryan Emmick provided the Butler County Learning Center Report. Emmick said that the center can provide services to 10 middle school students and 40 high school students. He also explained the value of virtual coursework and credit recovery work to student success.
