School Board addresses Rental Guidelines for School Facilities and Jr. Pro Softball

The Butler County Board of Education met in regular session on Tuesday, September 12, at Green River School.  Board members Ryan Daugherty, Debbie Hammers, Delbert Johnson, and Aimee Sanders were in attendance; Amy Hood was unable to attend.

Green River Principal Ben Annis welcomes the board members.
District Finance Officer Eric Elms gave the financial report for August.  The beginning balance was $1,718,420.76. The end-of-the-month balance was $1,861,961.76.
Superintendent Scott Howard reported on several events he has attended recently. He told the board he enjoyed speaking at the August Chamber of Commerce meeting and having the opportunity to talk about the school system.  He also told the board about the ribbon cutting at Morgantown Elementary School’s Patriot Store and thanked Assistant Principal Toby Turpin for his involvement in getting the store started.  Mr. Turpin said it has been wonderful to see the excitement and expressed his appreciation for the community leaders and others who have volunteered. Mr. Howard told the board he attended the Kentucky Farm Bureau Ham Breakfast and the GRREC Board of Director’s Meeting and will be attending the NJROTC Inspection at the high school and the Western Kentucky University Top Scholar Luncheon.
Assistant Superintendent Robert Tuck presented the new Facilities Rental Policy.  In order to offset costs, the board voted to increase the prices for renting the schools’ cafeterias and gymnasiums and the high school auditorium. The Board may rent school facilities according to the following hourly fee schedule:
                               BCHS    BCMS    ELEMENTARY
Auditorium*            $100.00*

Gymnasium             $50.00     $50.00      $50.00

Cafeteria/Commons  $50.00     $50.00      $50.00

A custodial fee of $25 per hour will also be required.  According to Tuck, “Because we have equipment and technology in the libraries and classrooms, those won’t be rented out anymore.”
Mr. Tuck also gave a beginning-of-the-year attendance report.  He commented, “All schools are up this year. Sickness doesn’t seem to be hitting us as early as it did the last two years.”
Elementary Curriculum Coordinator Donna Annis reported to the board regarding the use of Google as a district-wide initiative.  According to Annis, trainers came from the Kentucky Department of Education to teach the administrators how to use Google in order to be more efficient with forms, communication, schedules, calendars, lesson plans, discipline forms, curriculum documents, etc. Several teachers have also been trained on Google Classroom.

Butler County Middle School and High School Head Softball Coach John Embry addressed the board with a proposal to bring the local 9-12 softball league under the school umbrella as Jr. Pro league.  The league is an important feeder program for both the high school and middle school softball programs.  Currently, the softball league is operated independently from the school district.  In other sports, like football, basketball and soccer, the school district operates leagues for younger student-athletes.  Embry told board members that the board of the local league supports bringing the 9-12 age division under school control as a Jr. Pro Program.
