School Bd Recognizes Students and Staff

The Butler County Board of Education met last night at Morgantown Elementary School and spent much of a short meeting recognizing student and faculty accomplishments.  Only three members and Superintendent Scott Howard were in attendance; Amy Hood-Hooten and Charles Price.
 
Janet Weather of the MES faculty received recognition for achieving National Board Certification.  MES counselor Linda Tyree was recognized for receiving the 2013 Pamela Kay Gabbard Emerging Leader Award at the annual conference of the Kentucky School Counselors Association.  Sherlyn Bratcher of the BCMS faculty was recognized for receiving the Beth Henderson Award at the 2013 Kentucky Society for Technology in Education Conference.

Members of the BCMS Bridge Building Team were honored for their 2nd place finish at the 18th Annual BRIMS Regional Bridge Building Championship.  Nekayah Gray of the BCMS team received a pair of recognitions honoring her Architectural Design Trophy for Artistic Bridge Design and her 2nd place overall finish in the middle school division at BRIMS.

MES student McCauley Hampton was recognized for representing MES at the Regional Governor’s Cup; he participated in both written composition and math & social studies.  BCMS student Rylee McKee received recognition for her Honorable Mention in the Cyber Reporter category at the 2013 Kentucky Society for Technology in Education Conference.
 
Treasurer Eric Elms reported that the School District ended March with a balance of $1,644,953 which was an increase over the beginning March balance of $1,398,706.  Elms told the Board that the District’s month-end balance was about $154,000 higher than at the same time last year.
 
Superintendent Howard reported that he has been asked to serve on the Board of Directors for the Boys and Girls Club of Butler County.  He touched on activities in the past month such as the Smart Moves Pizza Party for 1st graders at MES, the FFA Field Day at the city park, and BCHS Football Night at the April 13 Bowling Green Hot Rods game.  Howard highlighted upcoming events, including the BCHS and BCMS bands performing at WKU April 18-19, Farm Safety Day on April 19, and Project Prom on April 27.  He reported that the last day of class is scheduled for May 23 and BCHS graduation for May 24.
 
The Board approved multiple agenda items in one motion toward the end of the meeting.  The approvals included $3,000 for Project Prom, renewal of student accident insurance through Roberts Insurance at a cost of $34,818, renewal of the contract with Graham Photography for the next school year, an FMLA request for a BCHS teacher, and 3rd year auditor’s contract with Carr, Riggs and Ingram LLC for 2012-13 school year.  Trip approvals included the BCHS tennis team trip to state tennis tournament May 15-18 in Lexington, the BCHS rocket team trip to attend TARC 2013 Fly-Off in Manassas, Virginia on May 9-13, and the TSA trip to state competition in Louisville on April 22-24.
