Salaries, Recycling Center among topics consided by Fiscal Court

Butler County Fiscal Court met in regular session on Monday, February 14, courthouse. All magistrates were in attendance.

With no old business to discuss, Butler County Sheriff Scottie Ward and Clerk Sherry Johnson asked the Court to approve budget amendments for 2022.  The state sets the salaries of the sheriff, judge, jailer, and clerk. Then, once the Federal Reserve sets the CPI (Consumer Price Index), the state sends down the salaries. This year's increase is a little over six percent, a sizeable increase over the past few years where the raise has not been over 2.96 percent since 2009.

Fifth District Magistrate Dillon Bryant expressed budget concerns over the mandated raises (not counting benefits) and asked about raises for the employees.

Judge/Executive Tim Flener shared the 2021 Solid Waste/Recycling activities. See the complete report at https://beechtreenews.com/articles/2021-recyclingsolid-waste-report

March 24, 25, and 26th are set for Spring Clean-Up days.

Fourth District Magistrate David Whittinghill made a motion to allow the Recycling Center to apply for a grant. First District Magistrate Stevie Givens seconded the motion. Second District Magistrate Kevin Phelps stated that the Recycling Center costs the County $70,000 to $85,000 per year to operate and doesn't need to get any bigger. Whittinghill said some people don't think we need an RV Park at Woodbury. Magistrate Bryant called "Question," which stopped all discussion. The original motion failed by a 3-2vote, with Whittinghill and Stevie Givens voting yes, while Phelps, Bryant, and Timmy Givens voted no.

Third District Magistrate Timmy Givens stated that the ferry at Rochester has been down several days since the repair to the Rochester Dam.  The water level is causing the apron on the ferry to drag against the wingwalls.  Judge Flener agreed and said they would look into the stituation.
