Rich wins B.C.M.S. Geo Bee - AGAIN!
Butler County Middle School's 24th Annual Geography Bee was held Friday, December 19, 2014. Following several classroom rounds held in November, ten student finalists participated in the school-wide competition. Alex Rich, an 8th grade student, took the top prize. Rich won the B.C.M.S. Geography Bee championship - his second title in as many years. Fellow 8th grader Sarah Belcher was runner-up.
other finalists were Dawson Phelps, Lindel McKinney, Brooklyn Henderson, Garrison Odle, Clay Odle, Dalton Rowans, Camryn Newland, and Caden Farrell.
8th grade Social Studies teacher Cody Donaldson coordinated the event, which is sponsored by the National Geographic Society. Becky Mudd, veteran (now retired) B.C.M.S. Social Studies teacher, returned to serve as the moderator of the competition. Other Social Studies teachers assisting were Penny Wallace, Thomas Harper, Laura Winters, and John Embry.
"I want to thank everyone involved in making this year’s Geo Bee a success," said Donaldson. "I'm proud of how our students competed and I'm confident Alex will represent our school well as he advances."
As the school winner, Rich will have an opportunity to compete at the state level in the spring with further advancement to national competition a possibility.
