Redistricting: Guthrie replaces Whitfield as Butler's U.S. Rep

U.S.Representative Brett Guthrie stopped by the Farm Boy restaurant in Morgantown on Thursday afternoon to let people know he will be representing Butler County starting January 1, 2013.  According to Guthrie, the redistricting of the Congressional districts will place Butler County in the second district. Butler County is currently represented by Congressman Ed Whitfield of the First District. Redistricting, done by the Kentucky General Assembly, is required following the U.S. Census.

Guthrie is not new to Butler County.  He served as Butler County’s State Senator in 2002.  Guthrie was   elected twice without opposition.

“I am proud to be back.  I like working with the people of Butler County,” said Guthrie. "I can be at the Provo Fish Fry in forty minutes."

“We hate to lose Ed, but are very glad to have you,” responded David Fields, Butler County Judge-Executive.

Guthrie represented the 32nd district in the Kentucky Senate from 1999 to 2008, where he served as vice chairman of the Economic Development, Tourism and Labor Committee, and was chairman of the Transportation Committee.

Guthrie is in his second term in Congress after winning the seat formerly held by Ron Lewis in 2008. He was re-elected in 2010.

Congressman Guthrie serves on the House Energy and Commerce Committee for the 112th Congress.  Guthrie also serves on the following subcommittees for E&C: Subcommittee on Health; Subcommittee on Communications and Technology; and Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade.

According to Guthrie, his opponent in the next election is Democrat David Lynn Williams of Glasgow.

When asked about the presidential race, Guthrie said, “There has to be a change.” Guthrie stated he has not endorsed any candidate in the Republican primary.

Congressman Guthrie emphasizes three main components, tax rates, energy costs, and workforce development, which are needed to turn around our economy.

Guthrie is a former vice president of Trace Die Cast, Inc., an automotive parts supplier based in Bowling Green.  He is a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point and earned a Master’s Degree in public and private management from Yale University.
