Commonwealth Policy Center held a press conference with several legislators at the Kentucky Capitol to address the confusion and misrepresentation of Kentucky's pro-life laws. Pro-abortion advocates have been arguing that these laws disregard and hurt women. "This couldn't be further from the truth," said CPC Executive Director Richard Nelson. "Many of the laws enacted in the last six years empower women. Laws like the Ultrasound Bill fully inform women about their pregnancy. Abortion Pill Reversal legislation, fully informs women about the side effects of chemical abortions and gives women a choice if they change their mind. The Baby Dropbox bill gives them a safe place to give up their baby in anonymity."

Nelson said that other bills recognize the humanity of the unborn. The 15-week Abortion Ban protects human life in the second trimester. The Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act bans late term abortion because the baby feels pain in the womb. The Human Rights of the Unborn Act ban targeted abortions based on gender, ethnicity, disability and race. "These are all reasonable bills that most Kentuckians support. Yet we have a narrative pushed by the far left abortion lobby confusing Kentuckians and undermining all of the pro-life protections," Nelson said.

Robin Sertell, an abortion survivor, also spoke about the impact of failed abortions. "Because of the abortion attempts on my life I was told I'd never walk. I was told I'd never talk, and here I am speaking to you today," Sertell said. She talked about the humanity of the pre-born and the need to protect them. "Once a baby survives an abortion, they are your constituents, your sisters, your wives, your mothers, your friends, and your neighbors."

Sertell humanizes the Born Alive Infants Protection Act passed in 2020 (but vetoed by Gov. Beshear). In 2021 the Kentucky legislature passed the bill that went into effect without Gov. Beshear's signature. While abortion survival is rare, it does happen. According to the Lozier Institute between 2020 and 2021, 35 babies survived abortions in four states. While only a handful of states are required to compile this information, it's estimated that several hundred babies survive abortion in the U.S every year.
