PREVIEW: BCHS Football Bears hoping to rebuild

photos by Laurie Keen Photography

With an "old" new head coach at the helm, the Butler County High School Bears are hoping to turn things around in 2018 from a win-less 2017 season.  Head Coach Brandon Embry, who has 13 years of coaching experience with the Bears, knows it won't be easy but he is looking forward to the challenge.

"Coming off an 0-10 year, we hope to get headed back in the right direction and be a winning program as Butler County has been over the last 15-16 years," said Embry.

The coach thinks the experience gained during last year's season will pay off this time around.

"We have several returning on both sides of the ball that gained varsity experience last year.  Our major strength is that all five of our offensive and defensive lines will be seniors.  We have good leadership returning as well," said Embry.   "While we have several players coming back, we are still going to young at many positions so a lot of our success will be dependent on how quickly those kids get up to varsity speed."

Senior Class

Offensively, the Bears return several players including the following:  Offensive line-  Logan Binion, SR,  6’ 4” 275 lbs. tackle;  Weston Merritt, SR, Guard- 6’0” 225;  Center- Michael Elmore- 5’11” 205; Guard- Kain Neighbors 6’0” 225; Tackle- Logan Inglis- 6’1” 250; QB- Alex Rich 6’3” 235 SR; WR-Keaton Diaz- 6’2” 185 SR; H- Dawson Carroll- 5’6” 125 SR; F- Ethan Lawrence- 5’8” 155 JR.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Bears return the following key players:  LB- Dylan Roberts- 5’11 215 sophomore; LB- Ethan Lawrence, LB-Warren Cameron- 5’10 185; DBs-  Corners- Keaton Diaz; D-Line- Alex Rich, Kain Neighbors, Aaron Bratcher 5' 10 205 lbs. SR, Logan Binion.

According to Coach Embry, Y-back Jacob Cox- 6’2” sophomore, QB,H, Safety Bryar Beasley- 5’ 10” 165 Sophomore, and Y-back Solomon Flener- 6’4” 200 freshman are players that could have an immediate impact on the upcoming season.

Decades of football coaching experience will be joining Embry on the sidelines.

Barry Frazier- Offensive Coordinator, QB

Brian Bivens- Defensive Coordinator, DBs, WR

Mark Allen-  Special Teams Coordinator, DL

Hunter Gary- JV head coach, WR, LB

Travis McIntosh- Strength and Conditioning, DBs

In addition to being the head coach, Embry will also coach the offensive line and linebackers.

Butler County will open the season on Friday, August 17, on the road at Logan County.  The Cougars are coming off an undefeated regular season and advanced to the second round of the playoffs before losing 43-8 to Hopkinsville.  They finished the year at 11-1.  The Cougars defeated Butler County last year 42-24.

"We are excited to get started at Logan County," said Embry.  "They return an experienced team from last year that went 11-1.  Logan has good depth at all positions on the field.  If we clean up the little things and play with the intensity we did against Breck in the first scrimmage, it will be a fun and exciting night no matter what the scoreboard says."

Coach Embry believes preparation will be important.

"We have to come off the bus ready to play.   It is important we come out and strike first against a very good team like Logan," said Embry.

Friday night's Butler-Logan game will be live on WLBQ 101.5 and streamed live on the Beech Tree News and WLBQ Facebook pages.  Kick-off is set for 7 p.m.
