PREP FOOTBALL UPDATE: Bears Roll 56-7 over Grayson; fall to Apollo

The Bears after two heartbreaking losses got back to their winning ways rolling over Border rival Grayson Co. 56-7.  Solid play by the Bears defense from start to finish, and execution on offense was the order of the night.

The Bears opening drive, QB Rex Henderson would go 8 of 12 passing with big plays by wide receivers Ty Burden, Brenden Shanklin, and Houston Hampton. But the thirteen play drive would stall inside the ten yard line; and the Bears turned the ball over on downs not being able to convert on a fourth and goal.

The Cougars of Grayson Co. would take over on the nine yard line, and their first possession would be three plays and punt, gaining only one yard in three plays. This is how the night would go all four quarters for the Cougars with little to no success. The Bears defense was solid; the entire unit consisting of Dillon Brosnan, Lake Cameron, Logan Richardson, Ty Smith, Blake Graham, Brenden Shanklin, Kaleb Hunt, Seth Gaskey, Warren Cameron, Rex Henderson, and Gage Ward all turned in solid performance.

The Bears on the next possession would strike quickly; a thirty-nine yard pass/catch touchdown from Henderson to Ward got the Bears on the board. The Richardson kick good, 7-0 Bears with 5:23 left to play in the first.  Grayson’s offense on its next possession three plays and punt. The Bears took over on the twenty-two yard line, and again quickly on first down a pass/catch touchdown pass from Henderson to junior wide receiver Daltyn Havens covered seventy-eight yards for the score. Richardson kick good 14-0, with 3:18 to go in the first quarter of play.

Grayson Co. offense struggled and for a third consecutive series went four plays and punt back to the Bears. The Bears kept the pedal down on offense, on this series running back Houston Hampton would go fifty-one yards on the sprint for an apparent touchdown only to be called back on a holding call. The very next play QB Henderson faked to Hampton, and would keep the ball speeding his way to a sixty-two yard touchdown run. Richardson kick good 21-0 with 11:15 to play in the half.

Grayson now trailing 21-0 found some life and got on the board making the score 21-7 with 8:27 to go in the half, but that would prove to be the only score of the night for the Cougars. The Bears on the next possession would strike again on first down, from the thirty yard line; a pass/catch again from Henderson to Havens would cover seventy yards for the touchdown. Richardson kick good, 28-7 with 4:26 left in the second quarter.

The Bears defense would join in the scoring on the next possession as a Grayson Co. pass would be turned into a pick six touchdown interception by junior linebacker Brenden Shanklin who went forty-five yards for the defensive touchdown. Richardson kick good 35-7 with 4:12 to play in the half.

The Bears defense would get the ball back for the offense again before the end of the half. The Bears sixth possession of the first half a seven play drive covering sixty-three yards would be capped off by a fourteen yard touchdown run by running back Hampton. The Richardson kick good, 42-7 with only fifty-seven seconds left in the half of plays.

The second half of play the Bears strike quickly; recovering the onside kick at midfield. Bears took over and took only three plays to find the end zone. The pass/catch from Hampton to Henderson would cover sixty yards for the touchdown; Richardson kick good 49-7 with 10:29 left to play in the third quarter of play. By KHSAA mercy rules at this point a running clock was in effect the remainder of the game.

Coach Emmick would soon clear the bench, every member of the squad got reps and playing time. The Bears were not done and would find the end zone one more time. The Bears recovered a lost fumble by the Cougars and from the twenty-four yard line would take only three plays to score. Sophomore QB Alex Rich would run in from three yards out for the touchdown, the Richardson kick good 56-7 Bears with 8:33 left to play in the game.

The Bears on the night forced three Grayson Co. interceptions, and recovered a fumble and an onside kick.  Here is a look inside the numbers of team and individual stats. The Bears are at home again next week, as they begin District play vs the Owensboro Catholic Aces. Kickoff is at 7pm, Friday, September 23 at BCHS.

Last week, Friday, September 9, the Bears fell to Apollo in tight game.  Below is a recap of that game.

The Butler Co. Bears fell to 2-2 on the season with a heartbreaking 32-29 loss to the Apollo Eagles. The crowd on hand saw an exciting game that saw lead changes throughout the night. Here is a quick look at how the Bears-Apollo game played out quarter by quarter.

The Bears would get on the scoreboard early; the game was only four plays old when wide receiver Blake Graham pulled in a forty-three yard touchdown pass from Rex Henderson. The Logan Richardson kick was good; Bears lead 7-0 with 10:26 in the first quarter of play.

The Eagles came right back, and twenty seconds later the Apollo QB on a keeper went sixty-one yards for the score, kick good game tied 7-7 with 10:06 in the first quarter.  The defense on both teams settled in on the next several possessions. The Bears got solid work out of defensive lineman Issac Flener, and linebackers Dillon Brosnan and Ty Smith.

The Bears on its fourth possession put together a ten play drive covering seventy-five yards. This time Henderson hit wide receiver Daltyn Havens on a forty yard strike in the end zone. Graham the holder on the point after attempt picked up the ball and jogged into  the end zone for the two point conversion run; score 15-7 Bears with 9:56 left to play in the first half.

Apollo would again put together a sixty-one yard, nine play drive for the touchdown. The Eagles would attempt the two point conversion to tie the game but the Bears defense came up with a big stop, conversion run no good. Score 15-13 Bears with 5:04 left in the first half of play.

But on the next Bears possession, the Bears would go three plays and punt, giving the ball right back to the Eagles. The Eagles would put together a fifty-five yard drive in six plays; all six plays were runs. The score came from the 255lb. fullback for Apollo from fifteen yards out; the two point conversion pass was dropped by Apollo. Score now Apollo took the lead 19-15 with 0:39 left in the half.

But the Bears were not done; a great kick return by Brenden Shanklin put the Bears on their own thirty –seven yard line. A five yard run by Henderson, followed by a Gage Ward catch for fifteen more yards put the Bears in position for a quick score. With only six seconds left and the last play of the half QB Henderson scrambled to keep the play alive; Henderson found an open wide receiver in the end zone, but the pass fell incomplete. Halftime Bears trailed 19-15.

The third quarter both teams would swap punts on their first possessions; but on the second possession the Bears drove seventy-four yards in nine plays. Three of those plays were pass/catches; a thirty yard catch by Shanklin, a twenty yard catch by Graham, and a fourteen yard catch by Bronsan. On second and goal from the eight yard line; Henderson ran for the touchdown, the kick good Bears retake the lead 22-19 with 3:10 left to play in the third quarter.

But Apollo answered the call on their next possession and put together a fourteen play drive that covered ninety yards. This drive ate up close to eight minutes of the clock and with 8:08 left to play in the game Apollo now led 26-22.

The Bears took over on the twenty yard line, and eighty yards and eight plays later retake the lead as Henderson sprints nineteen yards for the touchdown. Richardson kick good, Bears led 29-26 with 5:53 left to play in the game.

On the next possession the Bears defense held with a quarterback sack and two incomplete passes, Apollo was forced to punt the ball back to the Bears. But the Bears could not run out the clock, and were forced to punt back to Apollo. On first and ten, Apollo completed a pass/catch covering sixty-three yards for the winning touchdown, the kick was good. Final score Apollo 32-29.
