Prep Football: Bears use strong second half to beat Edmonson 49-14

Two games into the 2015 season and the opening minutes of a game doesn't appear to be the Butler County's strong suit.  But, finishing strong is as the Bears handed rival Edmonson County a 49-14 homecoming thumping on Friday night at Brownsville.

The game wasn't without early drama as Edmonson struck first with a 51-yard touchdown run less than a minute into the game.  The point-after kick was good to give the Wildcats an early 7-0 lead.

Butler quarterback Rex Henderson answered for Butler County with a 30-yard touchdown run. Logan Richardson's kick was blocked so the Bears still trailed 7-6.  The Wildcats scored again late in the quarter on an 8-yard run. The point-after kick was good for a 14-7 Edmonson lead.

Early in the second quarter, Henderson connected with Graham for a 23-yard touchdown play.  The two-point conversion attempt failed.  With eight minutes to go in the first half and trailing 14-12, Butler County took the 15-14 lead on a 21-yard field goal attempt by Richardson.  It was a lead that the Bears would never relinquish.  Butler added another touchdown at the 2:57 mark when a short pass from Henderson to Jacob Hixenbaugh resulted in a 93-yard touchdown.  Richardson's kick was good to give the Bears a 22-14 halftime advantage.

The second half was all Butler County as the Bears rattled off 27 unanswered points:  Henderson to Graham for 19 yards (7:38/3rd); Henderson to Graham for 26 yards (5:17/3rd); Dillon Brosnan, 1-yard run (11:57/4th); Ian Embry, 2-yard run (8:46/4th).  After getting his first kick blocked, Richardson was perfect in the kicking department for the remainder of the game.

Butler County had 272 passing yards to Edmonson's 48.  The rushing game was slightly more even as the Bears had 175 yards to Edmonson's 168.  Butler had one turnover (a fumble) and Edmonson had three (two fumbles and one interception)

"Edmonson County was the tale of two halves.  We came out early and it took a while to adjust," said B.C.H.S. head coach Ryan Emmick.  "Edmonson is a very good football team and was able to attack us early on and put us in positions where they were able to make plays.  We were not tackling well early so they had some long runs."

The coach likes how his team responded to Edmonson's early momentum.

"To our credit, the boys did not panic.  The players stepped up and took control of the game," said Emmick.  "We got big plays from a bunch of different guys that forced Edmonson to defend the whole field.  Once we started rallying to the football, our defense took over and we got a lot of momentum.  The second half showed what we have the capability to do If we are focused for four quarters of football," added Emmick.
